Howard S. King

Howard S. King, 70, of Alexis, IL, passed away at 8:18 a.m., Sunday, January 17, 2016 at his home.

Howard was born on January 17, 1946 in Danville, KY, son of Eddie Elmer “Pete” King and Jessie Mae (Bennett) Lindburg and Leslie Lindburg.  He was raised and educated in Alexis, graduating from Alexis High School in 1964. 

He married Kay McGee on March 23, 1968 in Galesburg, IL, she survives.

Howard was a union brick mason, he worked out of Peoria and Rockford, and he retired in 1994.  He was a life member of International Union of Brick Layers and Allied Craft Workers, and received his 50 year pin.  Howard was a member of the NRA and the Alexis United Presbyterian Church. 

He is survived by his wife Kay McGee King of Alexis, son Andy (Debbie) King of North Henderson, IL, granddaughters; Carolyn, Janelle, and Natalie King all of North Henderson, siblings; Mike (Cindy) Lindburg of Monmouth, IL, Susan Imler of Galesburg, IL, Alice Patterson of Monmouth, Lois (Bobby Joe) Ellis of Perryville, KY, and brother-in-law’s Russ Alexander of Decatur, IL and Kelly McGee of Galesburg.  Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews and good friend Larry Olson of Alexis.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Pat Alexander. 

Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 23, 2016 at Alexis United Presbyterian Church, Alexis.  Visitation will be prior to the service from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the church.  Interment will be in Alexis Cemetery at a later date.  Cremation rites have been accorded. Cynthia L. Lantz

Cynthia L. Lantz, 69, of Monmouth, IL, died at 9:06 a.m., Tuesday, January 19, 2016, at Seminary Manor, Galesburg, IL.

She was born April 18, 1946 in Prairie City, IL, the daughter of Chester L. and Garnet I. (Weaver) Taft.  Cynthia was raised and educated in Monmouth, and graduated from Monmouth High School in 1962.

Cindy married Donald E. Lantz in Moline, IL, on Sept. 10, 1966.   He preceded her in death on August 7, 2007.

Cindy was a homemaker.  She volunteered with the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, and she was the Chairperson for Warren County’s Daffodil Days.  Cindy enjoyed reading, gardening, and crafts.

Survivors include her daughters, Kelley M. Lantz of Monmouth, Stacey M. (Jimmy) Dutton, Kirkwood, IL, and her grand dogs; Daisy and Maggie.  Also surviving is special friend Betty Anderson of Monmouth, nephews and nieces including Teresa Kreps of Florida.    

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Bernard Morse

Bernard Morse, 75, of Delong, Illinois, died at 8:15 A.M. on Monday, January 18, 2016 at Marigold Rehab and Health Care Center, Galesburg, Illinois. 

Cremation rites will be accorded and a family gathering will be held at a later date.  Memorials may be made to the family.  Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home and Crematory, Knoxville, Illinois is in charge of arrangements.

Aline Mae Barkman

Mrs. Aline Mae Barkman, 90, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 12:10 a.m. Tuesday, January 19, 2016, at Seminary Manor in Galesburg.

She was born on July 9, 1925 in Center, Texas to James Edward and Alida Lee Magness.  She married Frank Edward Barkman on November 25, 1942 in Logansport, Louisiana.  He preceded her in death in August 23, 2011.

Aline is survived by two sons, Gary Wayne (and Dwana) Barkman of Brookhaven, Mississippi and Martin Dwayne (and Pat) Barkman of Arlington, Texas; three daughters, Francesca Aline (and Ed) Yeutson of Galesburg, Sharon Sue (and Rich) Nicholes of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Karen Sue (and Mike) Williams of Yukon, Oklahoma; 18 grandchildren, David, Lauri, Jennifer, Ben, Mindy, Kevin, Holly, Elise, Natalie, Johan, Meghann, Aaron, Tori N., Tori M., Kayla, Allison, Conner, and Hayden; and 21 plus great grandchildren.  In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and one sister.

She was a co-owner of Frank’s Donuts in Granbury, Texas for 25 years, retiring in 2000.  During this time Aline and Frank built the home in Granbury where they lived for over 30 years.  She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Granbury and later in Galesburg, where she was involved with many of the church’s activities.  She enjoyed sewing, camping, and shopping.  She was proud to be the wife of a veteran for 68 years.

Funeral services will be Saturday, January 23, 2016, at the Martin Funeral Home in Granbury, Texas.  Burial will be in the Holly Cemetery in Granbury.  Memorials may be made to the First Church of the Nazarene or the Defenders of Freedom Veterans Home, both in Galesburg.  Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel is assisting the family with the arrangements.  Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.

Virginia “Edie” Edith Spence

Virginia “Edie” Edith Spence, 93, of Galesburg, formerly of Avon, IL, died at 3:47 a.m. Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at Seminary Manor, Galesburg.

Edie was born on March 25, 1922 in Kimberly, MN, the daughter of George Wayne and Eva Gladys Cafferty VanWinkle.  After high school, Edie attended and graduated from Cottage School of Nursing.  She married Milo “Mike” Lee Spence on March 1, 1947 in Avon.  He preceded her in death on their 59^th wedding anniversary, March 1, 2006. 

Edie is survived by her son, Joe (Christine) Spence of Galesburg; one sister, Margie Seasly of Joliet; one grandson, Joel (Alana) Brown; one great granddaughter, Sienna Brown and one great grandson, Brody Brown.  Along with her husband, Edie was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and two sisters.

Edie worked as a nurse until the birth of her son.  Once she became a parent, she was a homemaker and worked as a seamstress out of her home.  Edie also worked at Doyle’s Gift Shop in Galesburg for a time.  She was a devoted member of Faith Baptist Church; enjoyed sewing and was well known for the beautiful quilts she made.  Edie was also a fabulous pie maker and loved to travel with her siblings.

Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. Saturday, January 23, 2016 at Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg.  No funeral services are planned at this time.  Cremation rites will be performed following visitation.  Burial of cremated remains will be at a later date in Avon Cemetery, Avon, IL.  Memorials may be made to Faith Baptist Church.  Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.watsonthomas.com. 

Sam Sjeklocha

Sam Sjeklocha, 96, of Monmouth, IL, passed away at 6:55 a.m., Monday, January 18, 2016, at Legacy Estates in Monmouth.

Lisa M. Cooper

Lisa M. Cooper, age 50, of Monmouth, Illinois, passed away at 5:35 am on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at Richard Owen Hospice in Peoria, Illinois. She was born on October 24, 1965 in Monmouth, IL, the daughter of John C. and Clara M. (Weston) Cooper. Lisa went to school here and attended Monmouth High School. She began employment at Ginny's Cafe as a dishwasher. She then worked at Marigold Nursing Home as a "Helping Hands Person" and at Butler Manufacturing in Galesburg until it closure. She lastly worked at Circle "K" here in Monmouth. Lisa enjoyed bingo, music, cooking, and playing the slots at the casino. She most enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Lisa is survived by one son, DiAndre Dortch of Monmouth, one daughter, Kyleigh Dortch of Monmouth, one sister, Paula Cooper of Monmouth, and three brothers, William (Toni) Cooper of Monmouth, Edward Cooper of Brownwood, TX, and Raymond J. (Tabitha) Cooper of Oquawka, IL. Also surviving is her significant other, Otis Dortch. She is preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Carol Ann Bodeen, and one infant brother.

A funeral service is planned for 3:00 pm on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth. Her family plans to receive friends from 2:00-3:00 pm prior to the service at the funeral home. A memorial fund is being established for her family.
