Lois Marie Appleby

Lois Marie Appleby, 94, of Galesburg, IL formerly of Monmouth, IL died at 4:35 pm, Saturday, August 12, 2017 at Seminary Manor, Galesburg, IL

She was born March 14, 1923 in Monmouth, IL the daughter of Emmett Ray and Ruth (Crandall) Peterson.   She was raised and educated in Monmouth graduating from Monmouth High School.                     . 

Lois married Edward A. Appleby at the Fairview Center United Methodist Church on August 7, 1943 and he died August 9, 2015.

She was a homemaker

Lois was a member of the Fairview Center United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing golf, bridge, traveling, handicrafts, and attending her grandchildren and great grandchildren’s many activities. 

Survivors include her two daughters, Jo Anna (Samuel) Cline of Avon Park, FL and Susan (Mike) Briggs of Monmouth, IL; two grandsons, Mike (Marianne) Briggs of Burlington, IA and Randy (Tracie) Briggs of Monmouth; three grandchildren, Matthew Briggs and Lauren Briggs of Burlington, IA and Emmie Briggs of Monmouth; one brother, Lee Peterson of Clemmons, NC; one sister, Greta Ryner of Monmouth, and several nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband,  two brothers, Ray Peterson and Max Peterson; five sisters, Kathryn Edwards, Leona Sprout, Faye Daily, Maxine Martin and Helen Bruyn.

Cremation rites have been accorded, no services or visitation is planned at this time.  A graveside committal service will be in Center Grove Cemetery, Kirkwood, at a later date.  Memorials can be made to the Lois M. Leah Belle Link Hicks

Leah Belle Link Hicks, 83, of Stronghurst, IL passed away Saturday, August 12, 2017 at her home.

She was born May 4, 1934 in LaHarpe, IL the daughter of Lewis and Eva Labourne Link. On October 2, 1951 she married Wayne Hicks in Burlington, IA. He preceded her in death on November 3, 2008.

Leah Belle attended LaHarpe High School. She worked for the Iowa Ammunition Plant, was self-employed to paint and wallpaper, and retired from the Henderson County Home Health Department. She also volunteered with the Hospice Program. She loved flowers, hummingbirds, squirrels, and playing dominoes. Leah loved to take care of other people. She enjoyed spending time with her family on her front porch.

She is survived by her children: Mike (Sharon) Hicks, Matt Hicks, Julie Hicks, and Laura (Steve) Crawford, all of Stronghurst, Tony Hicks and John (Julie) Hicks of Burlington, Jerry Hicks of Knoxville, IL, and Chris (Barb) Hicks of Roseville, IL, along with many grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Wayne (Louise) Link and Wendell (Eleanor) Link and one sister, Jean Louden, all of LaHarpe, and three sisters-in-law, Betty Link of Stronghurst, Janet Hickman of Kalamazoo, MI, and Georgia Cox of LaHarpe.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne, one son, Jeffrey Hicks, two brothers, Robert and Donald Link, and three sisters, Louise Boren, Louella Bowen and Dorothy Kern.

The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Pastor Lisa Unger and Rev. Karna Peterson officiating. Burial will follow in the Olena Cemetery. Forrest D. Pickrel

Forrest D. Pickrel, 81, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 6:25 am Saturday, August 12, 2017.

He was born January 24, 1936 in Gilson, Illinois the son of Reece A. and Eileen Connor Pickrel. He married the love of his life, Joyce Elaine Pascoe on February 6, 1959 in Galesburg.

Forrest is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joyce; his two sons, Allen (Julie) Pickrel and David (Annette) Pickrel both of Galesburg; his brother, Raymond (Dorothy) Pickrel of Galesburg; his granddaughter and pride and joy, Megan (Chase) Roof; special brother and sisters-in-laws and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and four sisters.

Forrest began working as a baker and a foreman for Lucky Boy Bakery. He then worked for May Company for several years. He went on to work for Dohrn Transfer and later for School District 205 in maintenance as a painter for over 11 years.

Forrest was very proud of earning his GED at Galesburg High school in 1980. He had coached little league and Babe Ruth baseball. He spent most of his time following his boys around watching or coaching their sports activities. He was a Die Hard Cub fan. Forrest enjoyed mowing his lawn and gardening. He was immaculate with his cars, always keeping them detailed. Forrie was known as “Grandpa” to many.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 am Thursday, August 17, 2017 at the First Church of the Open Bible. Pastor Mark Dexter and Deacon Michael Crummer will officiate. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 pm Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Christmas in Action. Joyce Keating Allison

Joyce Keating Allison, age 85, of Monmouth, Illinois, passed away at 11:20 A.M. on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at Knoxville Courtyard Estates in Knoxville, Illinois. She was born on December 23, 1931 in Monmouth, Illinois, the daughter of William Arnott and Marjorie Jean (Root) Keating. Joyce attended seven years in Mercer County at the Pleasant Hill School, then in Monmouth and graduated from Monmouth High School with the Class of 1949. She then attended Monmouth College for two years and then attended Millikan University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in primary education with the Class of 1953. On June 16, 1954, Joyce married David C. Allison at the 1st United Presbyterian Church in Monmouth. David preceded her in death on November 9, 2011. Joyce was a 2nd and 3rd grade teacher at Willits School in Monmouth. She also taught primary education in Urbana, Illinois and at State College, Pennsylvania. Joyce served on the Monmouth School Board from 1972-1981. She was a long time member of Faith United Presbyterian Church in Monmouth serving as an Elder, Deacon, and as the first woman to serve as Clerk of the Session. Joyce was a member of Pi Beta Phi fraternity, Chapter LE of PEO, a volunteer with the American Red Cross Bloodmobile and Community Memorial Hospital Auxillary in Monmouth. Joyce was named the Woman of the Year in 1992 by the Monmouth Altrusa Club. Joyce is survived by one daughter, Marjorie Carol (Daniel Barclay) Allison of Macomb, IL, two sons; Stuart Keating (Holly Whittet-Allison) Allison of Galesburg, IL and William Frederick Allison of Phoenix, AZ, her grandchildren: Clara Barclay, Sylvia Barclay, Gillian Allison, and Gwendolyn Allison. Also surviving are two sisters: Gwendolyn Lowe of Iowa City, IA and Linda Keating of Superior, CO. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband David, and one brother, William Keating.

　

As were Joyce's wishes, cremation is being accorded. A memorial service is planned for 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, October 15, 2017 at the Dahl Chapel, Monmouth College. Joyce M. Schisler

Joyce M. Schisler, 81, of Galesburg and formerly of Abingdon, passed away at 7:20 p.m. Sunday, August 6, 2017 at Wellbrooke Nursing Home, Kokomo, Indiana where she had been a patient since August 2, 2017.

She was born April 10, 1936 in Bishop Hill, Illinois the daughter of Glenn W. and Gladys Lindquist Heimer.  She married Richard Cox in Abingdon and they later divorced.  She married Robert E. Blevins on November 24, 1978 in Abingdon and he preceded her in death on April 6, 1987.  She married Roger L. Schisler on November 18, 1999 in Abingdon and he preceded her in death on September 15, 2000.  She was also preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Rita Litchfield. 

Joyce is survived by three sons of her first marriage, Randy (and Kari) Cox of Galesburg, Jeff (and Jana) Cox of Sharpsville, Indiana and Steve (and Kerry) Cox of Chatham, Illinois.  Joyce’s nine grandchildren include:  Jenna (and Conrad) Schrock, Janel (and Corey) Littlejohn, Zach Cox, Carter (and fiancé Allie Hull) Cox, Caleb (and Chelsea) Cox, Randi Jo Cox, Jarod Cox, Camden Cox, and Cayden Cox.  Joyce is also survived by three great-grandchildren; two brothers, William (and Barb) Heimer of Knoxville and Ronald Heimer of St. Augustine; and one brother-in-law, Larry Litchfield of Eldon, MO.  She is also survived by stepsons, stepdaughters, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

Joyce graduated from Abingdon High School in 1954.  She had lived in Abingdon most of her life.  She worked at the Abingdon Pottery for 21 years in the office of Human Resources until the Pottery closed.  She was a member of the Abingdon Christian Church and a former Sunday school teacher.  She enjoyed helping with the annual chicken pie supper at the church.  She was part of a group of ladies that made lap blankets for nursing home residents. 

As Joyce requested, cremation will be accorded.  Private burial of her ashes will be in the Abingdon Cemetery. To celebrate her life, a memorial service will be 11:00AM, Saturday, August 19th at the Abingdon Christian Church. Rev. Anna May Russell

Anna May Russell, 88, of Beavercreek, Ohio, formerly of Galesburg, Illinois, died at 12:23 P.M. on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at Trinity Community Nursing Home in Beavercreek, Ohio.

She was born on March 24, 1929 in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of Roy and Esther (Williams) Davis. She married Lawrence O. “Russ” “Polkadot” Russell in Galesburg, Illinois.

She is survived by three children; Ruby Crane of Wataga, Illinois, Peggy Brown of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Randy Russell of Beavercreek, Ohio; ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters and a brother; Ruth Roberts of Carthage, Illinois, Norma Reynolds of Keokuk, Iowa, and Kenny Davis of Keokuk, Iowa. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son, one sister and one brother.

She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Galesburg, Illinois. She was active in the church nursery when she was younger. She enjoyed doing word searches and loved being with her grandkids.

Visitation will be held on Monday, August 14, 2017 from 10:30 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home in Knoxville, Illinois, followed immediately by the Funeral Service, Rev. M. Josephine "Jo" Holmberg

M. Josephine "Jo" Holmberg, age 91, of Monmouth, Illinois, passed away at 8:45 P.M. on Thursday, August 10, 2017 at Monmouth Nursing Home in Monmouth, Illinois. She was born on December 22, 1925, the daughter of Roscoe and Henreitta May Merry. Jo attended schools in Monmouth and Oquawka. On August 16, 1942, married Rudy Holberg in Kahoka, MO., and he preceded her in death in 1994. Jo worked locally for Frank Chapin's Grocery Store, the Monmouth Nursing Home, and, she worked as an assistant at Zimmer's Drug Store for 25 years until her retirement. Jo is survived by three daughters; Judy Olson of Galesburg, IL, Vicki (Dennis) Rhodes of Monmouth, IL, and Carol (Arthur) Young of Monmouth, IL. She is also survived by six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Jo is preceded in death by her parents, husband Rudy, beloved son Randy Holmberg, and son-in-law Dennis Olson.
