Juliana L. Pittman Volk, 90, of Gurnee, Ill., formerly of
Monmouth and Roseville, passed away on Tuesday, December 2, 2014, in Gurnee,
Illinois.
She was born on May 16, 1924 in Chicago, Ill; Juliana was
the daughter of Lewis and Minnie Chindblom Larson. She was raised and educated in Chicago. She graduated from Augustana College, Rock
Island, Ill, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. She earned her Master’s Degree from Western
Illinois University in Macomb, Ill. in 1963.
Juliana married Max Pittman on August 24, 1946 in Chicago,
Ill. He preceded her in death in September of 1973. She later married Ralph Volk on October 15,
1983 in Monmouth. He preceded her in
death in July of 2002.
Juliana was an elementary school and music teacher in
Monmouth Public Schools for 29 years, retiring in 1984. She was the past president of the Monmouth
Education Association, member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, where
she served as Alpha Rho Chair and Past President of Lambda State. She was a member of the Roseville PEO Chapter
and was the Chairman of the World Fellowship Committee. Juliana was the Director of the Warren County
Musical Players from 1976-1989. She was
a member of the First Lutheran Church in Monmouth from 1951-1995. She served as Choir Director, Bell Choir
Director, and Council Member. Juliana was
part of the Adult Scholars Leadership Program at UNC, Wilmington, NC. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran
Church in Wilmington, NC from 1995-2000, where she served as President of the
WELCA. Juliana was a member of St.
Mark’s Lutheran Church, Waukegan, Ill., where she served on the church
council. She also served a term as the
Resident Council President at Sunrise Assisted Living, Gurnee, Ill.
She is survived by three daughters; Karren Pittman (Mark)
Jang of Oakland, CA, Julie Pittman (Thomas) Wendorf of Wadsworth, Ill., and
Marla Pittman (Keith) Carlson of Waterloo, Ia.
Grandchildren; TJ (Kathy) Wendorf of Park Ridge, Ill., Heidi Wendorf
(James) VanderVere of Gurnee, Ill., Kirsten Carlson (Rob) Riley of Defiance,
MO, Katie Carlson (Scott) Lau of Woodbury, MN, Peter Carlson of Anchorage, AK,
Gretchen Jang of Oakland, CA, Andrea Jang of San Francisco, CA, and Matthew
Carlson of Waterloo, Ia. Also surviving
are her great grandchildren; Brooke, JT, and Joel VanderVere, Sophia Riley,
Reagan and Sawyer Lau, Estelle Wendorf, Nicholas, Abigail and Sara Carlson,
Enrique and Jesse Rosales.
Juliana was preceded in death by both of her husbands.
Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 9,
2014 at the First Lutheran Church in Monmouth.
Private family interment will be in Roseville Memorial Park in Roseville,
Ill. Friends may call an hour prior to
the service from 10:00-11:00 a.m., at the church. Memorials may be given to a charity of your
