Gene
was born in Abingdon, Illinois on June 19, 1933, the son of Forrest
Nelson and Mary Anderson Nelson. He married Rebecca Anderson in
Abingdon in 1954. She survives. He is also survived by his children,
Dr. Jeffrey (Kathy) Nelson of New Braunfels, Texas and Jackie (Mark)
McFetridge of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; five grandchildren, Heather, Sarah,
Katie, Mollie and Shane and eleven great-grandchildren. He was preceded
in death by his parents and his sister, Jacquelyn “Jackie” McGrew.
Gene
was raised in Abingdon and graduated from Abingdon High School in
1951. After graduation he enlisted in the Navy 1951-55 with his high
school buddies. Returning home after his enlistment, he joined the
Bricklayers and Allied Crafts Union and apprenticed as a brick mason.
For nearly 60 years Gene honed his skills, respected his craft, and
enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow bricklayers and workers. He spent
much time engaged in the lives of his children and grandchildren as well
as being a good neighbor. Gene was a huge Chicago Cubs fan and
expressed regret that he will miss the Cubs winning the World Series
this year, but was so glad all the rest of us will celebrate. He was
also a Duke Basketball fan. Gene was a member of Harry E. Wiles
American Legion Post 381 in Abingdon and a charter member of the
Abingdon Historical Society.
Cremation will be accorded. A celebration of Gene Nelson’s life will
be held at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel on Tuesday,
February 3, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. Rev. Thomas Ek will officiate. Burial
of his ashes will be in the Abingdon Cemetery with Military Rites by
American Legion Post #381. A time of food and fellowship will follow
