Mary M. Rhoades, 94, of Monmouth
passed away at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at the Monmouth Nursing
Home.
She was born on August 12, 1920
near Macomb, IL, and is the daughter of Arthur and Bertha (Hawkins) Peterson Sr. She was raised and educated in Macomb and
Roseville, IL.
Mary married James V. Rhoades on
May 18, 1940 in Kahokia, MO. Jim and
Mary’s first date was a fried chicken picnic packed by Jim’s sister, Evelyn. Her
granddaughter, Jodi has that picnic basket. He preceded her in death on February 27,
1994.
She worked as a seamstress at the
Formfit Co. for 25 years. Mary was a
member of the First Christian Church in Monmouth. She enjoyed fishing at her and Jim’s cabin on
the Mississippi River, bowling, and going shopping with her best friend, Teresa
Vail.
Mary is survived by her son
Dennis (Vickie) Rhoades of Monmouth, her grandchildren; Brian Rhoades of Henry,
IL, Jodi Shepherd of Monmouth, Trevor Irey-Carson of Burns, OR, Nela Carson of
Burns, OR, Reed Carson of Phoenix, AZ, and Michael Carson of Wyoming. Also surviving are 10 great-grandchildren, 4
step great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her
parents, husband, daughter Leanne Irey-Carson, granddaughter Robin Sue Irey,
and 4 brothers.
Cremation rites will be accorded. A graveside committal of her ashes will be at
a later day in Monmouth Cemetery.
