Tina Marie Mitchem

Tina Marie Mitchem, age 53, of Bartow, FL, passed away at 5:15 am on Saturday, November 28, 2015 at the University Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. She was born on April 16, 1962 in San Gabriel, CA, the daughter of John and Alice Marie (Hindman) McDowell. She attended school in Illinois and Miami, FL where she graduated from a Miami High School. On December 16, 1995, Tina married Richard A. Mitchem in Winter Haven, FL and he is surviving. Tina was a homemaker. She loved to play Bingo on the internet. Tina is survived by her husband, Richard, two daughters; Jennifer and Kayla Mitchem of Bartow, FL, one sister; Paula (Tom) Williams of Silver Spring, MD, and one brother; Russell (Susan) McDowell of North Carolina. She is preceded in death by her parents and two still born infants.

No services are currently being planned. Cremation is being accorded. Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth is in charge of arrangements.

Elynore L. King

Elynore L. King, 94, of Monmouth, passed away at 7:40 p.m., Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at Legacy Estates in Monmouth.

She was born on February 8, 1921 in Knox County, IL, the daughter of Verne F. and Ednah (Alexander) Barnes. Elynore was raised and educated in Monmouth, and graduated from Monmouth High School. She then attended Whitworth Jr. College in Brookhaven, MS. Elynore later continued her education at Monmouth and Eureka Colleges.

Elynore married Vincent Lloyd King on April 26, 1943 in Maysville, KY; he preceded her in death in 1972.

Once returning to Monmouth, Elynore and her husband ran a truck farm and provided produce to Barnes Grocery Store. She also worked for a time at Formfit and Smolers. Elynore served as the Warren County Clerk for 12 years. While in Monmouth she was a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and served the American Legion Auxiliary. Faith was central in her life and she taught her family the importance of living and serving Christ. She was an active member of the First Christian Church in Monmouth while living there and upon retiring to Sun City, AZ in 1991 she was an active member in the First Christian Church of Sun City. There she served Ruth Circle, Dorcas Society and Women’s Christian Missions. Elynore loved to travel, and she traveled all over the world. She was also an avid animal lover. Elynore was loved by her family, friends, co-workers, and health care workers for her humor, compassion, lively spirit, and unconditional love.

She is survived by her three children; Billee (Eugene) Conard of Raleigh, NC, Debra (Leroy) Edwards of Monmouth, and Kenneth (Cathy) King of Waukegan, IL. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Clarence L. "Tom" Long

Clarence L. "Tom" Long, age 79, of Cameron, Illinois, passed away at 8:11 am on Thursday, November 26, 2015 at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois. 
 
Tom was born on October 24, 1936 in Monmouth, IL, the son of A. Lewis and K. Frances (Shimmin) Long. He was reared and educated in the Monmouth area, graduating from Monmouth High School. He later attended North Central College. On December 8, 1956, Tom married Marjorie A. Hein in Racine, WI and she is surviving. Tom was a 3rd generation grain farmer in Warren County succeeded by his sons. He was very active in his community and Church, serving as President of the Warren/Henderson Farm Bureau, Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow, FS and YMCA Board of Directors, and the Lake Warren Board. He held many offices at the Fairview United Methodist Church where he was an active member. Tom enjoyed sports and games with his family. He will be remembered as a great family man. 
 
Tom is survived by his wife, Marjorie Long of Cameron, IL, two daughters; Cheryl (Karl) Kuppler of Peoria, IL and Cynthia A. (Tom) Pepmeyer of Galesburg, IL, two sons; Craig (Kimberly) Long of rural Monmouth, IL and Chad (Lindsay) Long of rural Monmouth, IL, nine grandchildren; Katie (Matt) Wavering, Mary Kuppler, Scott Pepmeyer, Doug Pepmeyer, Michael Long, Kelly Long, Gina Long, Cohen Long, and Carsyn Long, two great-grandchildren; Bella Wavering and Charlie Wavering, three brothers; D. Lynn (Dorothy) Long J. Lowell (Dee) Long, and Benjamin L. (Joyce) Long. He is preceded in death by his parents.

A funeral service is planned for 10:00 am on Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at Fairview Center United Methodist Church. Visitation is planned from 4:00-7:00 pm on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth. Interment will be at Warren County Memorial Park in Monmouth. Kevin E. Claeys

Kevin E. Claeys, 55, of Galesburg, died at 8:40 a.m. Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at home.

He was born December 25, 1959, in Galesburg, the son of Camiel L. and Donna (Stinson) Claeys Sr. He married Tammy Good in 1984 in Galesburg.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Tammy; his mother, Donna Claeys of Galesburg; children, Jeremiah “Jay” Senders of Milford, Indiana, Jammie (and Jack Miller) Senders of Warsaw, Indiana, and Bobbi Claeys of Galesburg; nine grandchildren; and siblings, Camiel Claeys Jr. of Abingdon, Kelly (and Christine) Claeys of Burlington, Iowa, Kim Thurman of East Galesburg, Joey Claeys of Galesburg, and Christopher Claeys of Galesburg. He was preceded in death by his father.

Kevin had worked in roofing and farming. Most recently, he worked for Perley Cable Construction. He graduated from Galesburg High School. Kevin was a NASCAR fan, especially Jeff Gordon. He also enjoyed fishing and C.B. radios, and was an avid Chicago Bears fan.

Elaine Hays

Elaine Hays, age 85, of Rural Alexis, Illinois, passed away at 4:19 am on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at her residence. She was born on August 16, 1930 in Monmouth, Illinois, the daughter of W. Joseph and Lois M. (Earp) Leary. Elaine attended schools in Little York and Aledo. She was a graduate of Aledo High School with the Class of 1948. On October 9, 1948, Elaine married Raymond H. Hays in Aledo, IL and he is surviving. Elaine was a homemaker, tending to her family and the farm. She and Raymond moved to Monmouth, IL in 1955, and they resumed farming in the Alexis area in 1967 to the present. Elaine was also employed for twenty years as a waitress at the Park-N-Eat and Melings restaurants, both in Monmouth. She attended St. Theresa Catholic Church in Alexis regularly and is a member of it's Altar and Rosary Society. Elaine is survived by her husband, Raymond of Alexis, four daughters; Mary Ann (Dale) Nannen of Hopedale, IL, Sharon (Bill) Ciulini of Hoffman Estates, IL, Carol Winbigler of Wataga, IL, and Amy (Paul) Craane of Wheaton, IL, two sons; Michael W. (Cathy) Hays of Angola, IN, and John (Jennifer) Hays of Byron, IL,. There are twenty-two grandchildren, and twenty-two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters; Rosemary Williams of Raritan, IL and Alice Barnett of Woodhull, IL, and one brother; Charles Leary of Little York, IL. Elaine is preceded in death by her parents, two sons, one daughter, two grandsons, and one brother.
A Memorial Mass is planned for 10:30 am on Monday, November 30, 2015 at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Alexis, Illinois. The Rosary will be recited at 10:00 am prior to the Mass at the Church. Cremation is being accorded, and interment of her ashes will be at a later date. A luncheon and fellowship will follow the memorial mass at the Church. Barbara R. Knott

Barbara R. Knott age 81 of Bushnell, IL passed away at 5:02 P.M. Saturday November 14, 2015 at her residence. She was born on May 30, 1934 in Bushnell, IL to Kenneth C. and Eva Lucille Vincent Kirby. Barb is survived by 1 Son and 2 Daughters – Kenny Knott, Judy Walters and Carla (Ron) Promisson all of Bushnell, IL, 3 Grandchildren, 6 Great Grandchildren and 1 Great-Great Grandchild. She is also survived by 2 Sisters – Sue (Marshall) Buchen and Marcia Carter both of Bushnell, IL. She was preceded in death by her Parents, 2 Husbands – Jack Walters and David Knott, and 1 Daughter – Becky Knott.

Barb was active in the Bushnell V.F.W. Auxiliary where she served as President for several years. She served as the Bushnell Assistant City Clerk for 15 years and also Bushnell City Clerk for 17 years and she was also a Bushnell City Alderman. She was active in the Bushnell United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School for several years. Upon her retirement she dedicated her life to her Children, Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren. She was active with Campfire Girls, Bluebirds, and Rainbow Girls and she loved bowling. Barb was also an avid Elvis Presley fan.

Per Barb’s request, cremation rites will be accorded and a celebration of her life will be held at the Bushnell V.F.W. after 3:00 P.M. on Saturday November 28, 2015. Martha L. Bragd

Martha L. Bragd 65 of Monmouth died November 22, 2015 at her residence.  She was born January 18, 1950 in Burlington, IA the daughter of Gordon and Lois (Eaton) Nichols.  She married Kenneth Richardson and later married Jim Bragd both husbands preceded her in death. 

She is survived by her children Pamela (James) Diaz, Richard Walsh and June Detrick all of Monmouth.  She has numerous grandchildren and Great Grandchildren.  She is also survived by her siblings Mary Green, Harry Nichols, Bill Nichols, Dale Nichols, John Nichols, Allena Wilson, Donna Hallengren, and Karen Sparrow. 
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, 1 daughter, 1 grandson, 1 granddaughter, 1 great grandson and 1 sister.

She loved to cook and play Bingo.  She enjoyed friends and family and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Funeral Service will be held Friday November 27, 2015 at 11:00 am at Wise Family-Hoover Hall Funeral Home in Monmouth, Il.  Visitation will be held One hour prior to the Service.  Burial will be in Monmouth Cemetery.  Memorials may be made in her Memory. Larry Lee Piper, Jr.

Larry Lee Piper, Jr., 53, of Oak Run, Illinois passed away at 6:37 P.M. on Friday, November 20, 2015 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria, Illinois. 

Larry was born on June 6, 1962 in Harbor City, California, the son of Larry and Karen Piper. 

He is survived by two sons, Derek Lee Piper of Creve Coeur, MO and Joshua Drew Piper of Springfield, Illinois.  He is also survived by his parents; a brother, Lance Piper and wife Denise Piper of Morton, Illinois; a niece, Natasha Piper of Ashland, Illinois; and a nephew, Nicholas Piper of Morton, Illinois. 

He attended North Greene Schools in White Hall, Illinois and college at Lewis and Clark Community College and Eastern Illinois University. 

He was employed at Hanson Engineering firm in Springfield, Illinois for twenty years and presently employed as dairy manager at Hy-Vee in Galesburg, Illinois.  He attended The Oaks Community Church and had many hobbies and interests: model railroading, fishing, camping, and antiquing.  He was an avid Cardinal fan, and more than anything loved spending time with his two sons.  

A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at The Oaks Community Church in Oak Run on Saturday, December 5, 2015 at 11:00 A.M.  A visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 5, 2015 at the church.  In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Lung Association. Klaus H. Hemmer

Klaus H. Hemmer, 69, of Illiopolis, IL passed away Friday, November 20, 2015 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO. In March of 2013, he was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome, a rare blood disease, and in October of 2014 it advanced into Leukemia. His faith was enduring throughout his battle, and his loving wife and two daughters were with him every step of the way.

He was born on February 4, 1946 in Essen-Borbeck, Germany, the son of Karl and Gertrud Hemmer. In 1955 he moved to the United States with his family and became a U.S. citizen. October 24, 1986, he married Natalie Stoneking in Amboy, IL.

Klaus was a veteran of the U.S. Navy stationed on the U.S.S. Waller during the Vietnam War. He was an accomplished electrician and electrical contractor. He was a loving father of two daughters. He loved to cook, and his hobbies included working on his family horse farm, boating, and camping.

He is survived by his wife, Natalie of Illiopolis, IL; daughter Hanna (Tim) Rustemeyer of Fulton, MO; daughter Mercedes (Andrew Tucker) of Neenah, WI; step-granddaughter Rylie Rustemeyer; brothers Peter (Linda) Bergmann of Galesburg, IL and Michael (Ann) Hemmer of Bettendorf, IA; sister Lindsy (Gary) Adkins of Au Gres, MI; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Karl and Gertrud.


Funeral arrangements are being taken care of by Watson-Thomas Funeral Home in Galesburg, IL. Visitation will be from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM on Saturday, November 28, 2015 at Watson-Thomas Funeral Home, 1849 N. Seminary Street. Mass will follow at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 858 S. Academy Street, at 11:00 AM. Rev. William T. Richard E. “Eddie” Gaines

Richard E. “Eddie” Gaines, 73, of Galesburg, died unexpectedly Sunday, November 22, 2015, in the emergency room of OSF St. Mary Medical Center.

He was born April 26, 1942, in Galesburg, the son of Richard H. and Alice Louise (Wilkins) Gaines.  He married Sharon J. Dorsey January 26, 1963 and later Charlotte L. Tucker on October 10, 1987 in Galesburg.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Charlotte; his mother, Alice Louise Hays, formerly of Galesburg; children, Steven E. (and Penny) Gaines of Altona, Robert E. (and Sherry) Gaines of Galesburg, Debra Brasmer of Galesburg, George David (and Terri) Showalter II of New Boston, Robbie D. (and Linda) Showalter of Galesburg, Robin R. (and the late Dave) Wolford of Galesburg, and Brenda (and Bucky) Showalter of Galesburg; 17 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren with one on the way.  He was preceded in death by his father, Richard H. Gaines; his step father, Joe Hays; a daughter, Susan Marie; and a brother, Jim.

Eddie worked as an assembler at John Deere for 38 years, retiring in 2001.  He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1961 and lived his entire life here.  He attended Carl Sandburg College, taking a number of classes over the years.

Eddie was a member of the Sons of the American Legion Post 285, the Elks Club 894, Galesburg Rifle Club, National Rifle Association, ABATE, UAW Local 865, and Alpha Masonic Lodge 155 AF&AM.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding his Harley, and spending time with his family.  Eddie would do anything for anybody.


Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, November 27, 2015 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel.  Masonic rites will follow at 7 p.m.  Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, November 28, 2015 at the chapel.  Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens.  Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the Knox County Humane Society.  Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.

Jerry Michael Jones

Jerry Michael Jones, age 61 of rural Lomax, Illinois, passed away at 7:00 a.m. Saturday November 21, 2015 at his home. He was born August 9, 1954 in LaHarpe, Illinois, the son of Charles and Irene Nixon Jones. On August 25, 1979, he married Sheryl Purvis in Lomax.
Jerry was a graduate of Burlington High School, Burlington, Iowa. He was employed at Federal-Mogul Corporation in Burlington for the past 24 years. He also farmed near Lomax for many years. He was a member of United Auto Workers Local 1207 of Burlington. He enjoyed farming, fishing, camping, and especially, mushroom hunting.
Survivors include his wife, Sheryl, his mother, Irene Jones of Burlington, one daughter, Jill (Ryan) Shaw of Dallas City, IL, two sons, Christopher Jones and Jason (Kristee) Jones, both of Lomax, six grandchildren, two sisters, Janice (Jack) Dahlsten of Burlington, IA, Sara (Mark) Restaino of Aurora, IL., and two brothers, Larry (Karen) Jones of New London, IA, and Kevin Jones of Burlington, IA. He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Fred Jones.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday November 28, 2015 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City. No visitation is planned. A memorial fund has been established for the Lomax Ambulance Service. Condolences may be left at banksandbeals.com.

Lillian May Pogue

Lillian May Pogue, 88, of Galesburg, died at 1:20 a.m. Monday, November 9, 2015 at Seminary Manor, Galesburg.

Lillian was born February 22, 1927 in Mercer County, the daughter of Mack Tanner and Mary Amelia Allen Glass.  She married Bernard “Buddy” N. Pogue on September 29, 1951 in Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Galesburg.  He preceded her in death on March 10, 2013.  Lillian is survived by three sons James Bernard (Mary Ellen) of Centennial, CO, Patrick Eugene (Juliette) of Aurora, CO, and Matthew Allen (Nichol) of Galesburg; two daughters, Christine (John) Pogue Allison and Susan Marie Pogue both of Galesburg.  She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Mary Margaret Allison, Kathleen Anne Allison, John Bernard Pogue, Megan Catherine Pogue, Lillian Ann Pogue, Kimberly Marie Pogue, and Jeremy Patrick Pogue.  She is also survived by two sisters, Hazel (Bob) Lichty of Lakewood, CO and Joyce Coffman of Galesburg.  Along with her husband and parents, Lillian was preceded in death by two brothers, Mack and Wayne Glass and two infant siblings.

Lillian worked as a switchboard operator at Butler Mfg. for several years.  She then worked part time at Giants Grocery.  She then worked several years as a secretary at Galesburg Mental Health and retired as the business secretary at Henry C. Hill Correctional Center in 1989.  Lillian and Buddy were active members of Corpus Christi Catholic Church and actively supported the Catholic schools.  In her free time, Lillian enjoyed playing in a bridge club and crossword puzzles.  Most of all, she enjoyed being with her family. 


Funeral Mass will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church.  Rev. William T. Miller, IC will officiate.  Cremation rites will be performed following Mass.  No visitation is planned.  Private family burial of cremated remains will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Galesburg. Romona D. Stickell

Romona D. Stickell, age 87 of Knoxville, Illinois died at 4:49 P.M. on Thursday, November 19, 2015 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital, Galesburg, Illinois.

She was born on April 7, 1928 in Galesburg, Illinois the daughter of Curtis and Marie Scott Stickell. She attended and graduated from Knoxville High School in the Class of 1946. She then attended and graduated from Brown’s Business College in Galesburg, Illinois.

Surviving is her twin brother, Robert G. (Dorothy) Stickell of Knoxville, Illinois; Two nephews and one niece. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Harold Stickell.

She worked as a bookkeeper for the former Galesburg Mental Health Research in Galesburg, Illinois, then Henry C. Hill Correctional Center in Galesburg, Illinois. She was a member of the Knox County Historical Sites, the Harry C. Philblad American Legion Post #729 Auxiliary, and the First United Methodist Church of Knoxville, Illinois.  She loved her cats.

Graveside Funeral Services will be held at 2:15 P.M. on Monday, November 23, 2015 at the Knoxville Cemetery, Knoxville, Illinois. Rev. Dan Lybarger will officiate. Visitation will be held from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. at the Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes & Crematory in Knoxville, Illinois. Morris Coleman

Morris Coleman Sr., 87, of Galesburg, died at 3:30 p.m. Monday, November 16, 2015 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center.

He was born March 14, 1928, in Georgiana, Alabama, the son of R.C. and Zora (Hurbert) Coleman.  He married Corine Faison on December 14, 1946 in Alabama, Juanita Ward in 1964 in Galesburg, and Patricia M. Duncan on February 14, 1992 in Galesburg.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; three sons, Steve Coleman of Galesburg, William Coleman of Iowa, and Howard “Skip” Duncan III of Galesburg; five daughters, Debra (and Benny) Reynolds of Arizona, Stephanie (and Paul) Randolph of Indiana, Kathie Duncan of Pennsylvania, Davonne Duncan of New Jersey, and Tara Duncan-Main of Galesburg; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Dorris Coleman of Kansas City and Horace Coleman of Galesburg; and two sisters, Ola Mae Cunningham of Galesburg and Frances Bailey of Florida.  He was preceded in death by his parents; three sons, Morris Jr., Charles, and Ronald “Rondoo” Coleman; a daughter, Sherry Coleman; three brothers, Henry Coleman, Jimmy Coleman, and Wilbur Owens; and two sisters, Nora Mae Hurbert and Louise Britton.

Morris had worked at Louis Lakis Ford in Galesburg for 18 years.  He also worked at Butler Manufacturing for 47 ½ years, retiring in 1995.  He was a member and Senior Deacon of Bethesda Baptist Church for over 50 years.  Morris offered himself to his community to give prayers and to do God’s work.  The African American Affairs recognized and honored Morris for his community service with a Tribute of Appreciation. 

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at First Baptist Church, Galesburg.  Rev. Toby Carlos will officiate.  Morris’ daughter, Rev. Debra Reynolds, will offer the eulogy.  Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. with the family present beginning at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church.  Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery.  Memorial contributions in his name may be made to Bethesda Baptist Church.  Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.




Marion F. "Red" Shappell

Marion F. "Red" Shappell, age 85, of Biggsville, Illinois, passed away at 4:40 am on Thursday, November 19, 2015 at the Klein Center in West Burlington, Iowa. He was born on March 22, 1930 in St. Mary's Township, IL, the son of Howard and Pearl (Sellars) Shappell. Red attended school in the St. Mary's area and graduated from St. Mary's High School. He proudly served his Country in the United States Air Force. On April 15, 1951, Red married Betty Marie Sterett in Biggsville, IL and she preceded him in death on January 31, 2004. 

He began work at Caterpillar in Peoria, worked as a farmhand in Biggsville, and later worked at Engdahl's Implement in Monmouth. Red then owned his own livestock and grain farm in Biggsville from which he retired in 1997. Red loved the outdoors, fishing, elk hunting in Colorado, watching football and baseball, and attending St. Louis Cardinal baseball games. Betty and Red loved to travel and took many trips to Alaska, Hawaii, and all around the United States. 

Red is survived by two daughters; Rhonda (Kenneth) Peterson of Biggsville and Janis (James) Schott of St Louis, MO, two granddaughters; Brooke and Kate, and one grandson; Lucas. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty, three brothers; Merle, Robert, Harold, and one sister Virgie.
A memorial service is planned for 10:30 am on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at the First United Presbyterian Church of Biggsville. His family will receive friends from 9:30-10:30 prior to the service at the Church. Cremation is being accorded. Interment will follow the service at the South Henderson Cemetery. Marilyn J. Evans

 
Marilyn J. Evans, age 72, of Oquawka, Illinois; passed away at her Oquawka residence at 4:41 am on Wednesday November 18, 2015.  She was born on March 29, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois and is the daughter of Harry W. and Doris M. Nyquist LaDue.  She was raised in Chicago and attended local schools. She attended and graduated from Waller High School in Chicago with the class of 1961.  She married LaMarr W. Evans on December 20, 1962 in Chicago, Illinois and he is surviving her.  Marilyn has been a secretary for many years, for the Fuji Film Company in Chicago, IL and for Fair Department Store for two years, also in Chicago.  Marilyn and LaMarr then returned to Henderson County and she has been teller and cashier at the First State Bank of Biggsville which then became Casey Bank for thirty-three years until her retirement.  Marilyn was extremely friendly and would do something for everyone.  She loved to bake pies and always loved to do for her family, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.  She is survived by her husband, LaMarr of Oquawka, one daughter, Cheryl (Brian) Lindo of Cedar Rapids, IA. and three sons, Cory Evans of Oquawka, IL; Cody (Jenna) Evans of Burlington, IA; Cale (Stephanie) Evans of Oquawka, IL. Eight grandchildren  Jordan and Ali Lindo, Baylan Evans, Ahleah Hook, Emily and Cade Wilkerson, Andy and Isaac Evans. One sister, Laurel (Steve) Centracchio of Tucson, AZ and one brother, Jack (Melinda) LaDue Menifee, CA.  Numerous nieces and nephews are also surviving. Marilyn is preceded in her death by her parents and one son, Craig William Evans. A memorial service is planned by her family on Saturday November 21, 2015 at 10:00 am at the Biggsville United Methodist Church in Biggsville, Illinois.  Her family plans visitation and to receive their friends from 9:00 am to 10:00 am prior to the memorial service. Cremation was accorded. A fellowship luncheon  is then planned at the church following the service.  In lieu of sending flowers a memorial fund is being established for Hospice Compassus or her church, the Biggsvil 

Vivian M. Carley

Mrs. Vivian M. Carley, 97, of Galesburg died at 9:50 am Wednesday, November 18, 2015 in St. Elizabeth Hospice in Edgewood, Kentucky.

She was born October 2, 1918 in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa the daughter of Harvey R. and Clemence Carpenter Wolff. She married James R. Carley in Palmyra, Missouri on May 17, 1941. He preceded her in death on June 1, 2006.

She is survived by her two sons, Roger J. (and Sandy) Carley of Cleveland, Tennessee and Kenneth W. (and Robin) Carley of Dayton, Kentucky; four grandchildren, Jon, Stephen and Jarrod Carley and Cami Leo; three great grandchildren, Hannah, Sydney and Jack Carley; special niece, Kathy Olsen; her lifelong friend, Jane Adcock and her dear neighbors, Naomi Law, Mary Vallero and Kathy Woodward. She is preceded in death by her parents.

Vivian worked as the Warren County Deputy County Clerk for 4 years. She had also worked part time as the secretary for Burrel Braash attorney. She was born and raised in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, she also had lived in Monmouth and Galesburg since 1941. Vivian graduated from Ottumwa, Iowa. She was a member of the OAKS and the First United Methodist Church. Vivian was an avid Cubs fan.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 am Monday, November 23, 2015 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Pastor Mary Runge will officiate. Visitation will be from 10-11 am Monday at the chapel. Walter G. Malm

Walter G. Malm, 96, Galesburg, died at 6:25 a.m. Nov. 18, 2015, at Rosewood Nursing Home, Galesburg.
He was born July 22, 1919 in Galesburg to George and Hildur Erlandson Malm. He married Shirley Mae Ryberg in 1959. Surviving are his wife, a son, David, of St. Charles, IL, and his loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and one brother.

He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1938. During World War II he served in the Coast Artillery Corps in the South Pacific, including Guadalcanal, New Guinea, and the Philippines, for which he received two Bronze Stars.
He was employed by O.M.C. Gale Products for 37 years, retiring in 1983.  He was of the Baptist faith.

There will be no visitation. Cremation has been requested. Arrangements have been entrusted to Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg.  A family graveside service will be held at a later date at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Galesburg. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at

Mr. Thomas J. Brooks

Mr. Thomas J. Brooks, 74 of Galesburg, Illinois died at 5 a.m. Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at his home with his family by his side.

He was born on December 16, 1940 in Galesburg to Leo Dale and Irene Worden Brooks.  He married Peggy K. Johnson on November 24, 1979 in Cameron, Illinois.  She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Ronald S. (and Ellen) of Morrison, Illinois and F. Greg “Fatman” of Galesburg; a daughter, Lori A. (and Phillip) Bladel of Durant, Iowa; two special sons, David and Dan Callihan; a sister, Mary (and Ronald) Dickerson of Westminster, Colorado; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by a son, W. Todd; three brothers, Richard Eugene, Robert “Gus”, and Leo Dale; and a sister, Patricia Brooks.

Thomas was a millwright at Maytag for 42 years, retiring in 2000.  He was a 1958 graduate of Galesburg High School.  He served in the Army during the Vietnam War.  He was a member of the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285.


Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, November 21, 2015 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Rev. Janet Suzanne Carr

Janet Suzanne Carr, 68, of Galesburg, died at 9:03 p.m. Sunday, November 15, 2015 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria IL.   She was born August 3, 1947 in Bloomington, IL the daughter of Wayne Whitfield and Lola Jane Huss Hough.  She graduated from Galesburg High School and received her LPN in Canton, IL.  She married Ronald E. Carr on October 11, 1969 in Galesburg.  Jan is survived by two daughters, Julie (Wade Price) Martin of Phoenix, AZ and Ronda (Jason) Lambin of Alpha, IL; one son, Joshua Carr; four grandchildren, Taylor (Blake) King, Tyler Martin, Joseph Lambin, and Allison Lambin; and two great grandsons, Liam and Noah King.  She is also survived by one brother, Bruce (Mary) Hough of Omaha, NE; one sister, Mary (Phil) Breckling of Crosby, TX; and several nieces and nephews.   She was preceded in death by her parents.  Jan worked as a LPN for several years in Galesburg.  She also worked as a floor guard at Grand Roller Rink in Galesburg for many years.  She was a longtime member of Faith United Methodist Church in Galesburg, serving as a youth leader and was active in the ladies’ circle.  She loved to go roller skating, horses, her dogs and watching her girls play softball growing up.

Gregory L. “Mudd” Merrill

Gregory L. “Mudd” Merrill, 63, of Galesburg, died at 7:40 a.m. Monday, November 16, 2015 at home.

Greg was born January 5, 1952 in Monmouth, the son of William Lee and Jennie Curry Merrill.  Greg married Glenda Beth Held on December 1, 2002 in Galesburg.  She survives of Galesburg.  Greg is also survived by his father in law, Glenn Held of Ransom, IL; three step daughters, Melissa (Mike) Treaster of Lewistown, PA, Mindy Hooper of Colonial Heights, VA, and Molly (Robert) Sippio of Prince George, VA; one step son, Donovan Baker of Texas; nine grandchildren and 1 great grandson.  He is also survived by one brother, Kent (Crista) Merrill of Monmouth; one sisters, Karen (Mark) Troline of Macomb; two brothers in law, Larry Held of Baltimore, MD and Bobby Held of Ransom, IL; one sister in law, Jody (Gregg) Rinker of Galesburg; and a special aunt, Jody Morrisey of Galesburg.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Greg received his PGA tour card in 1989 and was a lifetime member of the PGA of America.  Greg became the golf pro at Bunker Links Golf Course in Galesburg in 1987.  He retired in December 2014.

Tina Lou Walker

Tina Lou Walker, 59 of Roseville, IL went home to be with the Lord, November 16, 2015 at 9:30a.m.  She was born Friday December 2, 1955, the daughter of Richard and Marie (Corzatt) Walker.

            Our beloved daughter, sister, aunt and friend is survived by her father Richard Walker of Roseville, IL; brother Roger (Susan) Walker of Dallas GA.  She is also survived by her nieces and nephews; Sarah Walker of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Stephen ( Julia) Walker of Carrollton, GA, David Walker of Tampa FL, Naavah Walker and great nephew Gideon Walker of Jerusalem, Israel, Alyssa Snyder of Kennesaw, GA, Matthew Snyder of Dallas, GA, Patrick (Courtney) Snyder  and great nephews Sawyer and Maddux Snyder of Villa Rica, GA, Aunts; Evelyn Shimmin of Roseville, IL, Patricia Downs of West Des Moines, IA and Erva Corzatt of Roseville, IL, Uncle; Clyde Kneen of Roseville, IL.  As well as her many friends she shared a home with in Monmouth.  She was preceded in death by her mother, Marie Walker and nephew Matthew Walker.

She was raised in rural Roseville, she attended special education classes, 1st grade through high school in Monmouth, IL.  She celebrated her 41st anniversary working at Warren Achievement Industries.  Tina lived in a Warren Achievement group home in Monmouth for many years.  She attended the First Christian Church in Monmouth, helping in many areas of the church, Tina enjoyed meeting people and going to the church potlucks.   Tina participated in many Special Olympic events.  Her endearing personality shone through and she easily made friends everywhere she travelled never meeting a stranger.  Tina touched a lot of people in her almost 60 years of life.

Funeral Service will be held Friday, November 20, 2015, 11:00 am at the Wise Family-Hoover Hall Funeral Home in Monmouth, IL. Shelby “Shellfish” Alexandra Strang

Shelby “Shellfish” Alexandra Strang, age 20, of Maquon, Illinois died on Saturday, November 14, 2015 in rural Maquon, Illinois.

She was born on September 23, 1995 in Baltimore, Maryland the daughter of Daniel and Carolyn Pelott Strang. She attended Knox County Academy and Carl Sandburg College.

Surviving are her parents, Daniel and Carolyn Strang of Maquon, Illinois; a brother, Shane Strang of Maquon, Illinois; her God children, Anthony and Alizabith Bernand of Maquon, Illinois; Special Friend, Dylan Rosecrans of Maquon, Illinois; Maternal Grandmother, Sandra (Ken Dewey) Pelott of Madison, Wisconsin; three uncles, David (Lori) Strang of Palm City, Florida, Timothy (Tony) Jimnenez of Dania Beach, Florida, Eric Martin of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; aunt & uncle, Paul and Pamella Bernand of Maquon, Illinois; and adopted family, Lori (Dave) Bybee of Maquon, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Irene and Stanley Strang and Maternal grandfather, Tim Martin.

She worked for Riverbottom Tree Service and most of all took care of her mother.

Sally Jean Louise Christianson

Sally Jean Louise Christianson, 18, of Wataga, died Friday, November 13, 2015.

She was born August 23, 1997, in Galesburg, to David and Patricia Christianson, of Wataga, Illinois.  She was homeschooled through high school and attended Carl Sandburg College.

Sally longed to travel.  She loved music--she sang, played guitar, bass, and banjo.  A member of the American Motorcycle Association, she was a flat-track racer.  She was a charter member of Pride of the Family, a Vasa Order of America Swedish culture club for youth.  She enjoyed working at "baked" pizza, and at The Beanhive coffeehouse, both in Galesburg.  She considered following her dad in a career in the Building Trades and Construction Industry.

Sally is survived by her grandmother, Darlene Christianson of Galesburg, widow of Donald F. Christianson.  Surviving, also, are her parents, David and Patti of Wataga; her three brothers, Josh Christianson of Galesburg, Bill Christianson of Phoenix, Arizona, and Isaac (and Christina, and their son Malik) Christianson of Joplin, Missouri.  She is survived by her three sisters, Mary Christianson and Natalie Christianson, residing in Galesburg, and Brooke Cart in Salina, Kansas.  Sally is survived by her uncles and aunts, Brian (and Jean) Christianson of Lakewood, Colorado, Sally (and Bob) Mangoff of Granite City, Illinois, Mark (and Barb) Johnson of Abingdon, Illinois, Sally (and Fredrick) Cole of Galesburg, Jim (and Barb) Henn of Bemidji, Minnesota, and Sharon (and Kevin) Peabody of Taylorville, Illinois.

Richard D. “Rick” McCone Jr


Richard D. “Rick” McCone Jr., 59, of West Burlington, Iowa, formerly of Galesburg, died at 9 a.m. Sunday, November 15, 2015 at the University of Iowa Medical Center in Iowa City, Iowa.

He was born March 15, 1956, in Galesburg, the son of Richard D. and E. Joyce (Searles) McCone Sr.  He married Susan Allen Reeves on June 20, 1987 in Knoxville.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Susan; his parents, Dick and Joyce McCone of Galesburg.

Rick was raised and educated in Galesburg, graduating from Galesburg High School in 1974.  He worked in various capacities, including the railroad, as a warehouse worker, and as a bartender.  He had lived in the Burlington area since 2000.

Rick was an avid Green Bay Packers and St. Louis Cardinals fan.  He loved music and as a “lefty”, mastered playing a right handed guitar upside down.  Rick was a lover of animals, especially his beloved Boston Terriers.


Cremation will be accorded.  Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel.  Rev. D. Maxine Martin

D. Maxine Martin, 95, of Galesburg, died at 1:35 a.m. Saturday, November 14, 2015 in Rosewood Care Center.

She was born August 7, 1920, in Colchester, Illinois, the daughter of James Arthur and Margaret Elizabeth (Finch) Greenup.  She married Lester V. Martin on August 18, 1940 in Davenport, Iowa.  He preceded her in death October 16, 2006.

She is survived by a son, Gary L. Martin of Burlington, Iowa; a daughter, Joyce (and Steve) Quinn of Morton, Illinois; a granddaughter, Lisa (and Randall) Schrock of Morton; and three great grandchildren, Rachel, Olivia, and Joel Schrock, all of Morton.  In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Jeff Peterson on October 21, 1988.

She was a homemaker.  Maxine also worked alongside her husband, Les for many years at the Martin Funeral Home in Knoxville, Illinois. She graduated from Macomb High School in 1938.  Maxine’s memberships included the First United Methodist Church of Galesburg, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Galesburg Women’s Club, and the Knox Farm Bureau.  Les and Maxine wintered in Florida for over 30 years. She enjoyed dancing, golfing, bowling, crafts, and playing cards, especially Bridge. Maxine and her husband never missed an opportunity to go to a dance and Maxine continued to dance with her son, Gary, after Les passed.

Betty A. Hoots

Betty A. Hoots, age 76, formerly of Oquawka, passed away at 7:30 am on November 14, 2015 in Knoxville, IL She was born on February 21, 1939 in Lafayette, Illinois and is the daughter of Clyde and Oral M. Clark Gray. She was raised in Layette where she attended local schools and the Lafayette High School where she graduated with the class of 1957. She was married to Edward E. Hoots on November 22, 1958 in Aiken, South Carolina. He preceded her on February 19, 1996. Betty was co-owner of Big Ed's Value in Monmouth, Illinois. She then was employed at Western Stoneware for over 30 years as a supervisor. Lastly she drove for Renzenberger Rail Service during which time she was recognized Nationally for her safe driving. She and her husband also were members of Young's Lake near Kirkwood, IL. Betty is survived by her companion, George Jackson of Galesburg, Illinois, one daughter, Deanna Sanchez-Hoots (Ashley) of Galesburg, IL and one son, Donovan A. Hoots (Trisha) of Knoxville, Illinois. There are eight grandchildren and several great grandchildren surviving. Her parents, husband, one son Daniel, one great grandchild, Kylie and her brother, Robert Gray all preceded her in her death.

John C. Huston

John C. Huston, 94, went to be with the Lord Jesus Christ at 3:28 pm Sunday, November 8, 2015 in Hazel Crest, IL.  He was born May 15, 1921 in Roseville, IL to Ira W. and Naomi M. (Cochran) Huston.  He married the love of his life, Ethel Jackson, on January 23, 1954 at the Roseville United Methodist Church.  She preceded him in death on October 19, 1995.  

He is survived by four children:  Dave (Suzanne) Huston of Roseville, IL; Susan (Rick) McWhorter of Bloomington, IL; Mike (Deb) Huston of Urbandale, Iowa; Linda (Mike) McConnaughay of Homewood, IL; one sister, Barbara McCreight (Bert, deceased) of New Albany, Indiana; eight grandchildren:  Mark Huston, Joshua McWhorter, Christina McWhorter, Brad Hansen (Athena), Tina Hansen Pickett (Jerome), Emma Huston, Ryan McConnaughay, Melissa McConnaughay and one great grandchild, Abigail McConnaughay along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one brother, Richard L. Huston (Pamela, surviving) and one sister, Helen Bersted (George, deceased).
John attended 2 one room school houses from the age of 6 years old – 8th grade (Sisson and Parker Schools), riding on his Shetland pony, Snip.  He graduated from Roseville High School, attended Iowa State, majoring in agriculture and served in the United States Navy during World War II.  He served as gunner on a submarine-chaser ship for 4 years after which he returned home to Roseville.  He farmed together with his father until Ira’s death, after which he and Ethel managed the family farm where they raised their four children.    John Huston was one of the initial adopters of no-till farming in Warren Country.
John had a deep love for his family, friends and his community.  He was involved in the Warren County Farm Bureau and enjoyed many activities with young and old alike such as driving the tractor for hay rack rides in the fall and playing baseball with his grandchildren.  John and Ethel participated regularly in a local card club for almost two decades.  He led by example with his love for the Lord and studying the Bible, and he and Ethel were very involved in the Roseville United Methodist Church.   They also enjoyed traveling to different regions of the United States throughout their marriage, including camping trips with their family.

Visitation will be held Saturday, November 28, 2015 from 9:30am – 11:00am at the Roseville United Methodist Church, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 11:00am.  Reverend Dennis Powers will officiate.   Memorial contributions can be made to the Roseville United Methodist Church or to the

Gregory Lee Merrill, 63, of Galesburg, died at 7:40 a.m. Monday, November 16, 2015 at home.

Arrangements are pending and have been entrusted to Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg.

Nicholas Andrew Kraynak

Nicholas Andrew Kraynak, age 22, of rural Oneida, Illinois died on Saturday, November 14, 2015.

He was born on July 10, 1993 in Galesburg, Illinois the son of Mike and Peggy Bennett Kraynak. He attended and graduated from ROWVA High School, the class of 2011. He then attended and graduated from Blackhawk East with a degree in Ag/Diesel Mechanics.

Surviving are his parents, Mike and Peggy Kraynak of Foxtown, rural Oneida, Illinois; paternal grandfather, Emil Kraynak of Youngstown, Ohio; his siblings, Michael (Laura) Kraynak of Normal, Illinois and Angela (Rudy) Martinez of Galesburg, Illinois; half-siblings, Gary Jones of Galesburg, Illinois, Gavin (Heather Scott) Jones of Galesburg, Illinois, Trent (Julie) Jones of Panama City, Florida, Jamie Hamilton of Galesburg, Illinois, and John Merideth of Irving, Texas; Also surviving nieces, nephews, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents and his paternal grandmother.

He worked the Bock’s Ag Repair for the past two years. He was an assistant Scout Master for Gilson Troop 233, he was an Eagle Scout; He was a committee member for the “Shave for the Brave”. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping, bee keeper and just started to make wine and mead, made from honey.


Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at the Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes and Crematory in Oneida, Illinois. Rev. Scott Cramer will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at the Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes in Oneida, Illinois. Interment will be at the Oneida Cemetery Oneida, Illinois.
