JEANETTE E. NIED


Mrs. Jeanette E. Nied, 98, formerly of Galesburg, died at 10:50 pm Saturday, December 5, 2015in the Lutheran Living Services, Muscatine, Iowa.

She was born September 11, 1917 in Galesburg, Illinois the daughter of Paul A. and Lydia Ophelia Root. She married Robert Amel Nied on May 20, 1944 in Moline, Illinois. He preceded her in death on January 7, 1992.

She is survived by her son, Robert (and Patricia) Nied of Plano, Texas; her daughter, Mary (and Gordon) Swanson of Illinois City, Illinois; her brother, Aldus Gridley of Aledo, Illinois; her sister, Julia Douglas of Eldridge, Iowa; two grandchildren, Rebecca Miller Baggett and Eric Swanson and two great granddaughters, Susan and Leeann Baggett. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a sister, Wilabelle Bough and a brother, Carlyle Gridley.

Jeanette was a housewife, working on the farm with her husband in rural Alexis, retiring in Galesburg in 1981. She graduated from Biggsville High School in 1934 and Browns Business College in 1942.  She worked as the executive secretary for May Company in Moline from 1942-1947. She had lived in Galesburg, Alexis, Moline and Biggsville throughout her life. She was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church in Galesburg, a former member of Emmanuel Methodist Church in Galesburg and a former member of the Norwood Presbyterian Church in rural Alexis. Jeanette was a member of the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post #285, the 8 & 40 and a member of the Red Hats Society. She enjoyed spending time with all her family and reading.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 am Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. Norman Mendell will officiate. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 pm Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at the chapel. Burial will be in Wataga Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the LA Grace Hall of Hope or to the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post #285. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com
