Frieda M. "Rita" Carlson, age 95, of Oquawka, Illinois, passed away at 4:05 pm on Monday, February 22, 2016 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa. She was born on October 9, 1920 in Steelville, Missouri, the daughter of J.T. and Josephine (Creek) Ives. She was reared and educated in the Steelville and St. Louis areas. On November 6, 1943, Rita married William E. Carlson in San Diego, CA and he preceded her in death in November, 1971. She was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses on July 17, 1956 in Citizens Lake near Monmouth. She dedicated her life to helping people learn a hope from the Bible, God's purpose for the earth and mankind. Rita enjoyed landscaping, decorating, and remodeling homes. She was an excellent seamstress and a particular joy was attending auctions. Frieda loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She is survived by on daughter, Kristen (Robert) Harr of Oquawka, IL, three sons; Ron (Elaine) Carlson of Monroe City, MO, Charles (Debra) Carlson and Brian (Linda) Carlson, both of Oquawka, IL, twelve grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. She is also survived by numerous adopted grandchildren. Rita is preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Randy Carlson, and two grandchildren, Steven Carlson and Heather Bender.
A memorial service is planned for 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 507 South Sunny Lane, Monmouth, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Great River Hospice House, West Burlington, Iowa or Schlotzhauer Home, Oquawka, Illinois.
