Alex Wignall, 23, of Henderson, Illinois, passed away at 12:45 a.m. Saturday, June 4, 2016. Alex was born December 12, 1992 in Galesburg. Alex is survived by his grandparents, Terry and Carol Wignall and Cyndi Anderson and Michael Richards, his mother, Tomorro Wignall, his father, Delmar Robertson, his brothers and sisters, Dyllan Robertson, Jazzmin Robertson, Jacob Richards and Katie Richards, his uncles, James Anderson, Joe Smith and Jeremey Smith, special friends, Britteny Mixon and Josh Leo and Alex’s girlfriend Sara Harvey.
Alex graduated from Galesburg North High School and was selected to give a speech at graduation. A year after graduation, Alex moved to Fort Collins, Colorado. He studied environmental science and got a job working as a forest ranger for Larimer County. A year later he joined AmeriCorps / N.C.C.C. and moved to Vicksburg, Mississippi. In Mississippi he became a certified Type II Wild Fire Fighter and team leader for Delta#3 squad. He was then sent to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to work with Habitat for Humanity and help build their 100th house. He was then sent to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to help rebuild after the damage from a tornado. After Oklahoma he went to West Jefferson, North Carolina to work at Mt. Jefferson State Natural Area building trails in the mountains. His last job for AmeriCorps before coming back to Illinois was at New Orleans, Louisiana to help with “Project Home Coming” to finish the work needed from the damage of hurricane Katrina. After Alex returned to Galesburg, he attended Carl Sandburg College to get his Emergency Medical Technician certification which he completed the course. Alex was getting ready to attend a program at Iowa State University in order to go to China and teach English. Two weeks ago Alex cut his long black hair and sent it to Locks of Love for children with cancer.
Alex touched the lives of so many people. The response to his untimely death has been overwhelming. If you met Alex he left you with an impression. If you knew Alex you knew he had a heart of gold and as a human being he was a diamond.
Cremation will be accorded. Memorial service will be 12 noon Friday, June 10, 2016 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Visitation will be 11:00 to 12:00 noon Friday, June 10, 2016 at the chapel. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
