Larry D. Wherley

Larry D. Wherley, 64 of rural Abingdon, died at 4:35 am Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at the Care Center of Abingdon with his wife and daughter at his bedside.
  He was born August 27, 1951 in Galesburg, the son of Ronald E. “Jack” and Maxine Thomas Wherley.  He married Judy Malone Lincoln on June 13, 1992 in Washington, Illinois.
  Larry is survived by his wife, Judy; one daughter, Patti (and Donnie) Stoneking of Abingdon and grandsons, Kolby and Parker Stoneking; his siblings, Tom Wherley of rural Abingdon, Roger (and Joan) Wherley of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Suzanne (and Rod) Batson of Abingdon and Richard (and Dana) Wherley of Eureka.  He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Joanne Malone and her family; as well as, many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and their families.
  He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, David Wherley.
  He grew up on the family farm east of Abingdon and had lived in the Abingdon area all his life.  He graduated from Abingdon High School in 1969.  He later graduated from Western Illinois University.  He taught Vocational Agriculture at Abingdon High School for 28 years.  He was the FFA Advisor, the livestock judging coach and he also coached baseball and football.  He retired from teaching in 2010.    He worked summers for Mangieri Construction.  He last worked in maintenance at Carl Sandburg College.
  He was a member of the American Hereford Association, the Knox County 4-H Foundation Board, the Abingdon Community Festival Association, the FFA Alumni, the Illinois Teachers Association, and was one of the original members of the Abingdon Jaycees.
  Larry was proud of his ag class members and he taught them the importance of community service.  The community service projects included assisting the American Legion with Memorial Day flag placement for veterans at the local cemeteries, setting up luminaries for the annual Abingdon Chamber of Commerce Christmas Walk, pouring new sidewalks in the community, cleaning up the old Abingdon Pottery grounds, planting of trees and landscaping at the Abingdon Schools and detailing fire trucks in Abingdon during fire prevention week.
  Last but not least, he was very proud of his grandsons and following them in their activities, whether playing sports, in the show ring or working alongside his family at Wherley Farms.
  Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 20, 2016 at the Abingdon Christian Church, 409 S. Main St. in Abingdon.  Rev. Darryl McDaniel and Bob Malone will officiate.  Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery.  Friends may call from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel.  The family will be present from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
