Rose M. "Rosie" Russell


Rose M. "Rosie" Russell, age 90, of Monmouth, Illinois, passed away at 12 :48 pm on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at the Roseville Nursing and Rehab Center. She was born on May 30, 1925 in Monmouth, Illinois, the daughter of Clyde M. and Grace E. (Abbott) Pople. She was reared and educated in Monmouth. Rosie graduated from Monmouth High School with the Class of 1943. Upon graduation from high school, Rosie and her cousin found work as secretaries with the Department of Navy in Washington, DC. Rosie's mother knew that she would never stay away from home, so, when purchasing her train ticket, made sure the ticket was one-way. While there, Rosie entered and won a contest to travel to Cleveland, Ohio to launch a warship, which was quite an experience for her. While working for the Navy, Rosie had a blind date with John P. "Jack" Russell, who served with the United States Coast Guard. On January 9, 1945, Rose and Jack were married in Monmouth, Illinois. Jack preceded her in death on April 9, 1999. Later in Monmouth, she worked for General Telephone, serving as an operator, working in the business office, and as a repair clerk until her retirement. Rosie loved to work crossword puzzles, crochet and visit with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She taught two and three year olds Sunday School at Immanuel Baptist Church in Monmouth for 42 years. Rosie was a longtime member of Immanuel Baptist Church. Surviving Rosie are one daughter; Sandra (Steve) Russell-Corbin of Monmouth, IL, one son; James P. (Christine) Russell of Centennial, CO, one grandson; Andrew Lorton, four granddaughters; Rebecca (Dora Rowe) Russell, Julie (Joe) Cox, Kristin Westfall, and Rachael (Simon) Tandy, and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother; DuWayne (Martha) Pople of Freeport, IL one sister, Clydean Pople-Hendley, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, infant son Terry Wayne, and two brothers.
 
A Memorial Service is planned for 10:30 AM on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth. Rosie's family plans to received friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Inurnment will follow the service at Monmouth Cemetery. A memorial fund is being established by the family and will be named at a later date. Cremation has been accorded.
