John T.
Armstrong, age 72, of Monmouth, Illinois passed away at 4:21 am on July 21,
2016 at his Monmouth residence. John was born on December 31, 1945 in Monmouth
and is the son of Frank Allen and Mary Eola Pedigo Armstrong. He was raised in
Monmouth, where he attended local schools and graduated from Monmouth High
School with the class of 1963. After high school he joined the Air Force and
served honorably in the Viet Nam War. John was previously married to Rhonda
Stricker. He later was married to Kyong H. Sel on July 3, 2013 at the
courthouse in Oquawka, Illinois. John was an oil well driller and retired as a
"Roughneck" from the company in Oklahoma. He for a time he owned his
own oil rig. John was a very handy individual and enjoyed many homemade crafts,
including cooking his famous chili and Christmas Candy. He crafted canes,
pottery, lamps, and even did woven rugs. He is survived by his wife, Kyung H.
Armstrong of Monmouth, Illinois, daughter Michele Armstrong Drain of Frisco,
Texas, and son Michael (Kaylee) Armstrong of Okmulgee, Oklahoma and their son,
Harley Pitts. John's step son, Eddie (Shayla) Dawson of Oquawka, Illinois is
also surviving. There is one granddaughter, Hannah Drain in Frisco, and two
step grandsons Tucker J and Peyton K. Dawson in Oquawka, Illinois. John's
sisters survive which are, Barbara Simpson of Moline, IL.; Mary Anne Finch
(Gary) of Preemption, IL; and Gwen Shaver (Francis) of Monmouth, IL. There is
one brother, Frank Armstrong, Jr. in Maumee, Ohio. John is preceded in his death
by his parents and three sisters.
According to his wishes,
cremation is being accorded. No service is currently being planned by his
family. Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth is in charge of the local
