Lewis (“Lewie”) Belding Potter, 94, was born June 17, 1922 to parents R. Doan and Elva Belding Potter on the family farm outside of Avon, IL. He peacefully passed away on July 1, 2016.
Lewie was a graduate of Avon High School. After serving in the Army during World War II, he married Elizabeth (“Libby”) Greene on November 5, 1946 and they moved to the farm. They had four daughters: Patricia White, Palm Harbor, FL; Rebecca Nott, Galesburg, IL; Susan Luft Wojtan (Bob), Anthem, AZ; and Anita Levi (Scott), Scottsdale, AZ. After 54 years of marriage, Libby passed away in 2000.
Lewie farmed with his father for several years raising Polled Shorthorn Cattle. The cattle herd was disbursed in 1960 and he raised hogs on that farm until 1992. He was a prominent member of the farming community for more than five decades and served as President of Fulton County Pork Producers for two years; served on the Board of the Fulton County FS/Spoon River FS for 12 years; served on the Board of Fulton County Farmer’s Home Administration, Illinois Farm Management Board, Fulton County 4H Board, Union Township Farm Bureau Board and Fulton County Agricultural Committee. He was an Avondale 4H Club Leader for 17 years. Lewie was always proud to be a farmer and said doing what you love is not work. He reluctantly retired from active farming in 2000 after farming for 54 years and remained on the farm until 2009 when he moved to Galesburg, IL.
As a World War II veteran, Lewie enjoyed participating in an Honor Flight to Washington, D. C. to tour various memorials. He also took pleasure in traveling and was able to visit Hawaii, several European sights, the Panama Canal, Mt. Rushmore, the Grand Canyon and more.
Lewie is survived by his four daughters; four grandchildren: Jason White, Sean White, Mike Nott, Brandy Hopping; ten great grandchildren and one great great grandchild with another on the way. He was predeceased by grandson Adam Perez; brothers Arthur, George, Paul and Gary; and sisters Martha Hoffmaster and Audrey Denholm.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 9, at Corman Memorial Home in Avon, IL followed by a graveside service at Avon Cemetery. A Celebration of Life for friends and family will be held at Club 41 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Harbor Light Hospice, 1865 N.
