Joan L. Deuger, age 84, of Monmouth, Illinois; passed away at 7:00 am on
Sunday September 18, 2016 at her Monmouth residence. Joan was born on May 16,
1932 in Alexis, Illinois and is the daughter of Arch L. and Fern Mills McKelvie.
Joan was raised in Alexis, Illinois where she attended public school and
graduated from the Alexis High School in 1950. She then entered Monmouth College
with a math major and graduated with the class of 1953. She later took classes
at Western Illinois University in Speech Therapy from 1968 to 1970. Joan taught
school in Arlington Heights for a time and then taught a year in the Monmouth
Public Schools. She later taught adult education at Achievement Industries for
several years and also served as a substitute teacher. While attending Monmouth
College she was employed at the Rivoli Theater and also served as a nurses aid
at Monmouth Hospital. She later worked several years at Far and Near Travel
Agency and later did alterations in her home for "The Model " clothier of
Monmouth. Joan married Donald R. Deuger on July 17, 1954 and they have been a
long time member of First Christian Church here in Monmouth, IL. where she has
sang in the church choir, taught Sunday School, was a member of it's Missionary
Circle, the Women's Council and has served as Church Treasurer. Joan is active
with the Community Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and has been a member of and is
the Regent for the Mildred Warner Washington chapter of the DAR. Her main
interests include her church, home and family, sewing, reading, travel, and
genealogy. She is currently the Vice President of the Warren County Genealogical
Society and served as it's regent. Joan is survived by her husband, Donald of
Monmouth, Illinois, five children, Mark (Jodi) Deuger of Groton, Massachusetts;
Jayme Deuger of Scottsdale, Arizona; Donna (Per) Guldbeck of Ft.Wayne, Indiana;
Roberta Goforth of Ashland City, Tennessee; and Gary (Terri) Deuger of Wake
Forrest, North Carolina. There are thirteen grandchildren and four great
grandchildren also surviving. Her brother, Arch McKelvie of Rock Island,
Illinois also is surviving. She is preceded in her death by her parents, one
sister, Mary Jane Pempeck, and her brother Clyde McKelvie.
A funeral service will be on Friday September 23, 2016 at 11:00 am at First
Christian Church in Monmouth, Illinois. Her family plans visitation prior to the
service from 9:30 am to 11:00 am also at the church on Friday. Interment will be
in Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery in Monmouth, Illinois. A memorial fund
has been established for First Christian Church Missions Fund. To leave an
