Richard “Dick” D. Sherman

Richard “Dick” D. Sherman, 82 of Abingdon, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully at 12:48 a.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at the Rosewood Care Center of Galesburg on the anniversary of his marriage to his beloved wife, June.
  He was born August 4, 1934 in Elmwood, the son of Lewis and Lorraine (Housman) Sherman. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers Billy, Howard, and Bernard Sherman. Dick is survived by his sisters Elizabeth "Betty" Way and Ruth Ann Bryan and a sister-in-law Loris Sherman
  He married Charlotte “June” Sampson on May 31, 1953 at the London Mills Methodist Church.  She preceded him in death on November 5, 2011. Dick and June shared a long, loving marriage of 58 years in Abingdon.  He will be greatly missed by his children, Tim (Maria) Sherman of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Peggy (John) Yeager of Galesburg, Rick Sherman of Abingdon, Penny (Alvin) Hendricks of Oneida; 15 grandchildren, Joni (Matt) Winegar, Nicole Chansler, Tony (Jamey) Ribble, Isaiah, Jacob, and Jennah Sherman, Zack (Kylee) Yeager and Ian Yeager, Caleb, Levi and Caitlin Sherman, April Douglass, Amber, Noah and Logen Hendricks; 11 great-grandchildren, Ethan, Eli, and Emrik Winegar, Owen Chansler, Natalie, Tristan, Jessica, and David Ribble, Joclyn and John "J.T." Yeager, and Mallory Douglass.
  He graduated from Abingdon High School in 1952.  He worked at the Abingdon Pottery for 43 years in the Kiln Department, retiring in 1996.  Dick loved sports and was an avid St. Louis Cardinal Baseball fan and a Bradley Braves basketball fan.  He also enjoyed coaching. He and Wayne Green coached girls softball in Abingdon for many years.
  Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, June 2, 2017.  Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 3, 2017 both at the Abingdon United Methodist Church, 401 N. Washington St. in Abingdon. Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery.  Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
