John M. “Mike” “Pappy” Cooper

John M. “Mike” “Pappy” Cooper, 70, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 6:25 am July 5, 2017 at the VA Hospital Iowa City, Iowa.

He was born August 12, 1946 in Petersburg, Illinois the son of Virgil Franklin and Mary Elizabeth Hubbard Cooper. He married Carolyn Sue Freeman and later married Betty Marie Selser

Mike is survived by his children, Robert “Mike” (Carrie) Cooper and Becky Cooper both of Galesburg; three brothers, Glen Cooper of Beardstown, Illinois, Danny Cooper of Galesburg and Robert Cooper of Athens, Illinois; his sister, Nancy Honea of Petersburg; eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, his son, Christopher Cooper, three sisters, Lois Glenn, Betty and Margaret Cooper and two brothers, Gerald and Gary Cooper.

Mike served in the US Army from 1966-1968 as a field wireman. He was stationed at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. Mike had received the Sharpshooter Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

Mike had worked for Gates Rubber Company from July 23, 1968 to his retirement on August 1, 1998. He graduated from Petersburg Harris High school in 1965. He enjoyed making quilts, remodeling and working on cars and mowers. He was a great handyman.

Visitation is scheduled from 5:00-7:00 pm Monday, July 10, 2017 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Military Honors will be at 7:00 pm Monday by VFW 2257/Legion 285 Veterans Honor Guard.
