Michael A. McCune

Michael A. McCune, 52 of Galesburg and formerly of Abingdon, passed away at 12:05 p.m. Sunday, April 19, 2015 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria following a courageous battle against lymphoma. 

  He was born June 5, 1962 in Galesburg, the son of Glenn E. McCune, Sr. and Bartola (Cervantez) McCune, who both preceded him in death.  He married his companion of 11 years, Lori Smith on March 19, 2015 in Galesburg.  She survives.

  Also surviving is one son, Brandon (Marisa) McCune of Davenport, Iowa; one daughter, Brittani McCune of Abingdon; two grandchildren, Brooklyn and Branson; one stepson, Nathan Perez of Galesburg; two sisters, Bev (Don) Links of Decatur and Cathy (Troy) Ziegler of Rio; two brothers, Glenn E. McCune Jr. and Dave McCune both of Abingdon; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

  Mike graduated from Abingdon High School in 1980 and from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale in 1982.  He currently worked as a signalman for BNSF.  Prior to that, he had worked as a sales representative for Coca-Cola and as a laborer at Smurfit-Stone.  He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Abingdon.  He was a former volunteer fireman for the Abingdon Fire Protection District.  He enjoyed golfing, doing yard work and spending time with his family and especially, his grandchildren.  He was a NASCAR fan, an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and Bears, and the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.  He lived life to the fullest.

  Praying of the Rosary and Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday, April 24, 2015 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Abingdon.  Father William Miller, I.C. will officiate.  Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery.  Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel.

  Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Rebels for a Cure Relay for Life Team.  Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.  

  The Mike McCune Benefit will still be held on Saturday, April 25 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Abingdon American Legion, 546 State Route 41 in Abingdon.
