Larry Arthur Dumse

Larry Arthur Dumse, 65, of Galesburg, died at home Sunday morning, May 24, 2015.

Larry was born on March 8, 1950 in Burlington, IA, the son of Harold Frederick and Darlene Jones Dumse. He married Nancy Sue Haynes on February 26, 1972 at Faith United Methodist Church in Galesburg. Larry is survived by his wife Nancy of Galesburg; two daughters, Toby (Jeremy) Lester and Haly Dumse both of Galesburg; and three grandchildren, Andrew Dumse-Grindle, Bryce Lester, and Caitlyn Lester. He is also survived by two brothers, James F. (Sandy) Dumse of Danville, IA and Michael S. Dumse of Galesburg; one sister, Sherry Dumse-Mears of Burlington, IA; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandparents, Fred and Hazel Dumse; and two sisters, Sheila “Corky” Yvonne Swarringhm and Junie Theobald.

Larry joined the US Army on April 29, 1967. He served in Vietnam earning many medals including the Bronze Star medal with First Oak Leaf Cluster and Valor Device for his acts of heroism and the Army Commendation Medal with first Oak Leaf Cluster. He was honorably discharged on April 28, 1970. After he was discharged from the Army he worked at Maytag. He then went to work for Burlington Northern Railroad in 1973. He worked as a trainman and conductor. He retired in 2001.

Larry enjoyed spending time with his family and going to the family farm in Iowa. He also enjoyed hunting, collecting guns, artwork, working in his garden, and in his younger years martial arts.

Per his wishes cremation rites have been accorded. A visitation is planned for Saturday, May 30, 2015 at Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg from 3 to 5 p.m. Military rites will be conducted at 5 p.m. Burial of cremated remains will be at a later date at the family farm in Iowa.
