Lillian Cohen Michelson

Lillian Cohen Michelson, 100, of Laguna Woods, California, formerly of Galesburg, died Sunday, May 3, 2015.

She was born January 7, 1915 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin the daughter of Charles and Anna Cohen.

After graduating from the University of Wisconsin Madison in 1936, she moved to Chicago, where she met her husband, Werner, and had two sons, Mark and Kirk.

In 1951, they moved to Galesburg, where her husband, Werner, was a partner in Fred Schubach’s, a men’s and women’s clothing store in the Bondi Building.

Lillian became involved culturally, civically, and educationally in Galesburg activities. She was honored as the Volunteer Woman of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce.

Lillian was president of numerous clubs and organizations including, PTA, AFS, League of Women Voters, Red Cross, United Way, American Cancer Society, Knox-Galesburg Symphony, Civic Art Center, and Cottage Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliaries. Lillian and Werner were part of the founding families of Temple Sholom. Lillian became the first woman president at the Temple and served for six years.

She was selected as one of 12 diverse residents to write a guest editorial column for the Galesburg Register-Mail four times a year, which she did for 10 years. Lillian also received numerous awards from numerous volunteer activities during her 23 year residency in Laguna Woods, California retirement community.

Lillian is survived by her sons, Mark (and Kate) residing in Hong Kong and Kirk (and Karen) from Minneapolis; granddaughters, Alexandra and Ashley; and grandsons, Max and Aaron.

Visitation will be at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel at 9 a.m. Thursday, May 7 2015 with a 10 a.m. graveside service to follow at Brookside Cemetery in Galesburg. Penny Gold will officiate.
