Winifred L. Zay

Winifred L. Zay, age 96, of Monmouth, Illinois passed away at 3:45 pm on Thursday, June 11, 2015 at the Marigold Health Care Center in Galesburg, Illinois. Winifred was born on February 5, 1919 in Monmouth, and is the daughter of David Vincent and Leatha Grace Dennis Torley. Winifred was raised and educated in Monmouth where she attended local school and graduated from Monmouth High School. She then attended and graduated from Monmouth College. Winifred was married to Merrill John Zay on October 10, 1943 in Monmouth, Illinois and he preceded her in death on March 28, 1995. Winifred owned and operated for many years Torley Hardware in Monmouth, Illinois. She retired in 1983. She is a member of the First United Methodist Church in Monmouth , Priscilla Circle, and Church Women United. She has always been active in most affairs of the church. She was previously in Business and Professional Women, Travel Club, Order of the Eastern Star and other activities of the community. She is survived by her son, John D. (Patty) Zay of Scottsdale, AZ and her grandson Michael Richard (Stacey) Zay. There is one Great-Grandson. Jonathan Michael Zay, her cousin Kent (Kathy) Willis of Monmouth, IL, and two nieces Janet Hill in Coal Valley, IL and Cynthia Thornton. She is preceded in her death by her parents, husband, two sisters, Melba Lang and Barbara Thornton, six nieces and one nephew.

A funeral service will be at the First United Methodist Church of Monmouth on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at 10:30 am with her burial in Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery. Her family plans visitation the evening before at Turnbull Funeral Home on Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm A memorial fund is being established for her First United Methodist Church or Strom Center of Monmouth, Illinois.
