Mary was born July 23, 1947 in Galesburg, the daughter of Richard Arthur and Viola Mae (Johnson) Crouse. She married Donald E. Purchase. They later divorced. Mary is survived by one daughter, Amy (Chris) Howard of Galesburg and three granddaughters, who were her everything, Jessica Howard (Andrew Steck), Chelsey and Carly Howard all of Galesburg. She is also survived by her sister in law and best friend, Earlene Crouse of Galesburg; a brother in law, Ray Broderick of Knoxville; a special aunt, Harriet Anderson of Galesburg; and her nephews, Richard (Sheila) Crouse and family, Bill (Kay) White and family, Rich (Teresa) White and family, Rod White, and Bob (Suzy) White and family. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Larry Crouse and a sister Margo Broderick.
Mary worked at Bridgeway for over 30 years, retiring in 2014. She was an active and long time member at the First Christian Church in Galesburg. Mary was very crafty and enjoyed making many different arts and crafts. She also enjoyed cooking and baking and always baked her granddaughters birthday cakes and made all their Halloween costumes. Mary could always be found at all of her granddaughters sporting and school events.
Per her wishes cremation rites have been accorded. A celebration of life will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, August 8, 2015 at Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. Pastor Greg Fitch will officiate. Memorials may be directed to the Knox County Humane Society or to the Salvation Army.
