Stefan McLaughlin

Dr. Stefan Thomas McLaughlin, 50, of Galesburg, died at 3:30 a.m. Saturday, August 1, 2015 at Unity Point Health-Methodist, Peoria, Illinois.

Stefan was born November 19, 1964, in Galesburg, the son of Thomas Nathaniel and Helen Elizabeth Masterson-McLaughlin. He is survived by his life partner, Allison Skinner, of Galesburg; one son, Kasey (Kaitlyn Kvorka) Peterson, of Bloomington; two daughters, Laney Wong and Brooklyn McLaughlin, both of Galesburg; his siblings, Rita (Michael) Moore of Media, PA; Karen (Jim) Troxell of Severna Park, MD; Mark (Jerry) McLaughlin of Galesburg; Garry (Kay) McLaughlin of Amarillo, TX; and Barb (Ray) McLaughlin-Olson of Bloomington. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and nephew, Matthew McLaughlin.

Stefan was a 1982 graduate of Galesburg High School. He obtained degrees at Carl Sandburg College, and Illinois State University, Bloomington. Stefan achieved his Doctorate of Optometry at University of Missouri-St. Louis. He was an optometrist for 13 years at the Galesburg Clinic and most recently at Wal-Mart Optical. He was a member of the American Optometric Association.

Stefan was an avid Cincinnati Reds fan. He valued the time he spent with his family above anything as they were a special treasure that he held dear in his heart. Stefan passed down his love of cars to his son Kasey, and spent countless hours with him at car shows. Thanks to Stefan, Laney has developed a love of science and a drive to enter the medical field when she graduates school. Brooklyn was his special helper when it was time to work on the car or complete household projects; they loved to watch movies together and every year looked forward to their date to the annual “Daddy/Daughter” Dance.

Per his wishes cremation rites will be accorded. A celebration of life will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at the Thomas Legacy Center at Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg. In honor of Stefan’s memory a memorial fund will be set up for his children at First Mid-Illinois Bank and Trust, 1535 North Henderson Street, Galesburg, Illinois. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.watsonthomas.com.
