Gerald "Jerry" L. Purchase

Gerald “Jerry” L. Purchase, 64 of Abingdon, died Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at his home.

He was born March 5, 1951 at the former Saunders Hospital in Avon, the son of Donald Edward and Marge June Serven Purchase. He married Sheryl Hawkins (Wike) on July 14, 1973.

Jerry is survived by two daughters, Melissa (Jason) Johnson of Abingdon and Amanda (Dave) Roberts of Columbia, Missouri; five grandchildren, Marissa (fiancé, Colten Matheny) Johnson, Seth (fiancé, Alyvia Cordle) Johnson, Helaina Johnson, Kendall Roberts and Preston Roberts; his mother, Marge Purchase Douglas of Galesburg; two brothers, Robert E. (Vicky) Purchase of Oquawka and Charles Dean (Janet) Purchase of Cameron.


He was preceded in death by his father.

He graduated from Alexis High School in 1971 and he holds a school record in track & field. He worked as a welder at Butler Manufacturing in Galesburg and retired after 22 years. His special interests included painting cars in his garage, hunting with his longtime friend, Scott Hawkins, fishing, camping at the Mississippi River with his family, cooking, and shopping on QVC network. He enjoyed anything John Deere, he was a “Mr. Fixit”, he was artistic and enjoyed woodworking, building furniture and he even built a log home. He was known as a prankster and enjoyed a good joke. Later in life, sports became important to him and he was an avid Cubs, Bears and Bulls fan.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, October 12, 2015 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. His daughters, Melissa and Amanda, will honor him with eulogies at 7 p.m. Cremation will be accorded following the visitation.
