Jack Franklin Shive, 79, of Galesburg, died Friday, Dec. 18, 2015, at
his home.
He was born July 27, 1936, in Montezuma Township, Ill., the son of
Robert and Mary Nicholson Shive. He
married Janice L. Settles on Aug. 18, 1957, in Macomb. She survives.
He is also survived by his daughters, Cindy Ballance of Decatur and
Sally (and Jon) McKee of Germantown Hills; a son, Douglas (and Lisa) of Torrance,
Calif.; and grandchildren, Sarah, Rachel, and Hannah Ballance, Kelli (and
Chase) Owen, Sean McKee, and Lanie, Saige, Paxton, Avery, and Alden Shive.
He is also survived by six sisters, Vera Havens of Alsey, Frances
Giger and Norma (and A.C.) Reel, all of Pittsfield, Alice Guth of Gridley,
Betty Wilder of Fondulac, Wis., and Jane Nevius of Bartonville; and two
brothers, Richard “Dick” Shive of Winchester and Joe Shive of White Hall.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Karla Shive; grandson,
Zachariah Ballance; brothers, Bill, Tom, and John; and sister, Mabel Chapman.
Jack received a bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois University and
a master’s from Ball State University along with coursework at Colorado State
University and Purdue.
He taught for more than 20 years, last teaching at Galesburg District
205, then worked for Hill Correctional Facility.
Jack loved the outdoors, enjoying fishing, hunting, hiking, bird
watching, and wildlife. He spent hours
in his gardens, growing flowers, vegetables, and fruit trees, sharing his
produce with many. You would only find
him indoors when the St. Louis Cardinals were playing.
He loved spending time with family, visiting his siblings and children,
and was the No. 1 fan at his grandchildren’s events.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Monday, Dec. 21, 2015,
followed by a service at noon, both at First Presbyterian Church, 101 N.
Prairie St., Galesburg, with the Rev. Shawn Smith officiating. A luncheon will follow the service at the
church. Private family burial will
follow the luncheon at Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First
Presbyterian Church.
