James Kenneth “Dave” Powell,
82, of Galesburg, died at 7:50 a.m. Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at home.
He was born January 10, 1933
in Cave City, Kentucky, the son of Kenneth Paul and Mary Elizabeth
(Fitzpatrick) Powell. He married Beverly
Jean Snyder on December 28, 1952 in Alexis, Illinois.
He is survived by his wife of
nearly 63 years, Beverly; a daughter, Cherie J. (and Dennis) Meyer of Lake of
the Ozarks, Missouri; two granddaughters, Melissa (and Michael) Weber of
Dayton, Ohio and Malinda (and Christoffer) Tidwell of Clovis, New Mexico; and a
sister, Della Evans of Munfordville, Kentucky.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Nyle and Lola
Snyder; and a sister, Nora Nunn.
Dave was a fireman for the
Burlington Northern Railroad for 10 years.
He then went to Wagoner Printing, where he was an offset pressman for 30
years, retiring in February of 1995.
After retirement, Dave and Bev enjoyed several winters in Florida in
their motorhome. Dave was a basketball
and football official in the area for more than 20 years. He was a member of the Galesburg Official’s
Association and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2014. Dave was a marathon runner, running the
Boston Marathon in 1981. His name was
listed in Runner’s World Magazine.
Dave served in the United
States Army for two years, where he was stationed at the Dugway Proving Ground
in Tooele, Utah. He was a member of
Trinity Lutheran Church, Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285, and V.F. W.
Post 2257.
As Dave requested, cremation
will be accorded. Visitation will be
12:30 to 2 p.m. Saturday, December 19, 2015 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg
Chapel. Memorial service will follow at
2 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Len Hoffmann officiating.
