Boyd R Whitt

Boyd R Whitt, 99, of Galesburg, passed away Dec. 29, 2014 at Martin Health Care, Westminster Village, Bloomington, Illinois.

Boyd was born on Sept 17, 1915 in Gallatin, Missouri, the son of Harley and Clara (Place) Whitt. He married Maxine Petersen in Aurora, Illinois. She preceded him in death. They were married 60 years. Eight half brothers and sisters preceded him in death, one survives and two brothers and one sister preceded him in death.

He is survived by one son, Boyd R. Whitt Jr. (Shannon) of Huntley, Illinois and one daughter, Diane L. White (Joseph) of Bloomington, Illinois. Boyd had five granddaughters, Amy Hansen/Badjie of Madison, Wisconsin, Sara (Scott) Brown of Singapore, Rev. Shelly (Blake) Wood of Carmel, Indiana, Joan (Chris) Gjesfjeld of Bloomington, Illinois, and Rachel (Matt) Stalter of Corvallis, Oregon. He also had 13 great- grandchildren.

Boyd attended a one room school house in Gallatin, walking three miles to and from school. He was pulled out of school at a young age to help his father work their farm. In his teens he left Gallatin and headed for Aurora and got a job building and repairing bridges for the CB & Q railroad. In 1940, Boyd started as a fireman on steam engines and was promoted to engineer in 1952. Just before his retirement in 1977, he narrowly escaped death when his passenger run collided head-on with a derailed Burlington Northern freight at a bridge crossing. His rapid response saved many lives. He loved working for the railroad and only lamented that his career ended as it did. He was forever grateful for the “good life” that working on the railroad provided for his family.

He and his wife Maxine spent many winters in Florida and traveling the U.S. and Europe. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Galesburg for many years and a member of Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and life long member of Little John Conservation Club in Victoria, Illinois.

Boyd was a caring and loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, genuinely interested in their lives and able to stay young at heart, playing checkers with his great-grandson on his last birthday. He was a phenomenal gardener and could repair anything.
Boyd loved fishing and being in nature, knowing the name of every tree and bird. He was a wonderful story teller and a faithful friend. Even though he was profoundly deaf for the last 15 years of his life, he never met a stranger and was a friend to all. He will be missed.

A celebration of Boydʼs life will be 11 a.m. Friday, January 2, 2015 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. His granddaughter, Rev. Shelly White Wood will officiate. Martha Helen LaDuke

Martha Helen LaDuke, 95, of Oneida, IL passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 27th, 2014 after spending the last few days surrounded by her loving family. Martha was born January 25, 1919 in Oneida, IL to Carl and Agnes (Mortenson) Lingwall. Oneida was her home under the watchful eye of her father that owned and operated Ling's Hatchery for 50 years and her brother John who preceded her in death in 1968. She graduated Oneida High School Class of 37 with High Honors. Martha went on to be a student at Knox College for 2 years studying Pre-Med while being a member of Delta Zeta. From there her education took her to the University of Iowa where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in nursing. Graduating in 1943 with Honors was a part of the National Honorary Nursing Society and a member of Sigma Theta Tau. As a student at the University of Iowa she served in the Navy Reserve as a nurse. She planned on entering the Navy as a nurse, but after a strong objection from her parents she transferred to a civilian program in Public Health (which was her favorite class in school). She also spent two semesters at the University of Minnesota in their Masters of Public Health program, but did not finish. She always said this was one of her biggest regrets.

Returning home to Oneida, she gained employment at Cottage Hospital in Galesburg, IL. Martha then went on to work for the Peoria Public Health Department. In her free time she volunteered at the Peoria YMCA and made weekly trips to Camp Ellis, (an Army Base near Farmington, Il) to dance with the new service men. This is where she met her future husband Franklin who preceded her in death. They were married in 1946 after his discharge from the Army. She returned to Cottage Hospital as an evening supervisor part-time and worked as a school nurse at ROVA. After having her fill of upset parents due to a lice outbreak, she moved on to be a teacher at St. Anthony's Hospital School of Nursing in Rock Island, IL.
On a vacation, she explored a new job opportunity that lead to her to being hired as the 1st Nursing Coordinator of the Carl Sandburg College LPN program in 1968.
She worked there for 12 years. During this time she pursued and received a Master of Science Degree in Community Health from Western Illinois University in December 1981. This completed the goal she set for herself many years prior at school in Minnesota; even though it was just a short period before she retired.

Martha was the proud mother of three boys and leaves behind: Gary LaDuke of Bloomington, Ca, James (Pat) LaDuke of Galesburg, IL and Ron (Nancy) LaDuke of Oneida, IL. Grandchildren: Jennifer (Doug) Wilson, Keri Miller, Aaron (Krystal) LaDuke and Ashley (Brian) Hill. Great Grandchildren: Miranda Wilson, Mason Wilson, Michael Wilson, Audrey Miller, Emersyn Miller, Wrigley Miller, Finley LaDuke and Cohen LaDuke.

Outside of being the constant matriarch of her family she found time to volunteer at the American Cancer Society Board and many other public health related groups. She was a proud lifetime member of the Oneida Presbyterian Church where she also taught Sunday School and was a part of the Women's Association.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, January 1, 2015 at 12:00 Noon at the United Church of Oneida, Illinois. Rev. David Pyell will officiate. Visitation will be held from 10:00A.M. until 12:00 Noon on Thursday, January 1, 2015 at the United Church of Oneida, Illinois. Interment will be at the Oneida Cemetery, Oneida, Illinois. Dean Grimes

Dean Grimes, 91, passed away peacefully on Friday December 26, 2014 with family members at his side. He lived a long and meaningful life that he would have described as “fantastic.”

Dean Elmo Grimes was born on September 2, 1923, in Ursa, IL to Harold and Fae Grimes. He is survived by his three children: son, Terry (and Sue) Grimes of Kampsville, IL, daughter, Sandy (and Dave) Wood of Galesburg, and daughter Nan (and Bob) Watson of Ft. Collins, CO. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren, Nathan (and Stacey) Grimes, Ian (and Jennifer) Grimes and Seth (and Stacey) Grimes; Sara, Ryan and Mike (Megan MacDougall) Wood; Emily and Elissa Watson. He had seven great grandchildren: Brennen, Zakary, Tyler, John, Julia, Evan and Caleb. Dean’s parents and two brothers, Leroy and Maurice, preceded him in death. He had many nieces and nephews: Diane, Jan, Brad, Kathy, Kent, Beverly, Rita, Linda and Tom who viewed their Uncle Dean and Aunt Jackie as very significant people in their lives.

Dean built a grand life through good old fashioned hard work, dedication to values, and love of family, friends and country. He was the type of person who would light up any room he entered and he left an indelible mark on the lives of many. He was a country boy who grew up on the family farm in Ursa, IL. He was the youngest of the Grimes boys who were renowned for their leadership and athletic prowess. All three sons excelled in basketball and track and broke many school records. Upon his graduation from Mendon High School he began his college years at Culver Stockton College in Canton, Missouri but when World War II broke out, he entered the Naval Air Corps. As a bombardier, his plane flew over Hiroshima and Nagasaki viewing the devastation as the war ended. He returned to Culver Stockton when the war ended and during his final years at college, he taught at Canton High School, was their varsity basketball coach and was known for his winning record.

Dean met the love of his life, Jackie Koch, in 1942 and they married shortly after World War II ended in 1945. Upon graduation from Culver Stockton in 1948, Dean soon began his 40 year career with Moorman Manufacturing Company. At Moorman’s, he was a salesman, district sales manager and state sales manager before becoming the general manager of the Alpha plant in 1959. The Alpha division was the first manufacturing plant outside of the Quincy area and the plant grew from 42 employees to 126 employees under Grimes’ leadership.

Dean often used his “coaching” abilities when managing his employees as he seemed to bring out the best in each individual with his encouragement and inspiration. His faithful and loyal employees were often fondly referred to as his “2nd family” and many of his former employees have continued to stay in touch over the past 25 years.

Throughout his life he had a strong passion for agribusiness and was active in community, civic and farm related activities. He initiated and served as President of the Alpha Chamber of Commerce in 1960 and was an original board member of the Alwood Business Association. He served on the Board of Directors of the Illinois Leadership Council for Agricultural Education and served as Chairman of the Sponsoring Committee of the Illinois Future Farmers of America Foundation and as the President of its Board of Directors. Because of his work in agriculture, he received the Honorary American Farmer Degree.
Dean was a life-long supporter of community health care and education serving on the OSF St. Mary Hospital Area - Wide Board for 12 years and was a past Board President. In addition, he served on the Board of the Galesburg Ambulance Service and was also a past President. He served as a faithful Bridgeway Board member for many years serving on the Boards of Harrington Family Services Foundation and Bridgeway Training Services. Dean was a member of the Mason’s Lodge, the American Legion, and the Sons of the American Revolution and served many years on the Board of Soangetaha Country Club also serving as Board President.

Beyond work and community service, Dean enjoyed people first and foremost and easily made lasting friendships. He loved to attend sporting events, cheer on his grandchildren, and give them a few “pointers.” Dean was an avid golfer who traveled to Guadalajara, Mexico during the winter months for many years to extend the golf season and experience the interesting culture and kind-hearted people of this country. He enjoyed traveling with Jackie and together they journeyed across the country and the world. He viewed life, family and friends as unique gifts and with Dean around there was always plenty of laughter, jokes and great stories. Holidays, Birthday Nights, and Family Reunions were honored traditions that Dean’s loved ones will always cherish.

Visitation will be held on Sunday December 28th from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel; a private family graveside service will be held on Monday at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens.
