Don Larry Johnson, 79, of Wataga, died at 4:54 p.m. Thursday, February 25, 2016, at home.
He was born February 18, 1937 in Galesburg, the son of Victor and Josephine (Hedstrom) Johnson. He married Doris Swanson on December 24, 1956. She preceded him in death on March 9, 1990. He married Barbara Koch on November 23, 1990 in Monmouth.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; two daughters, Diane (and Terry) Steck of Oneida and Jodi (and Kevin) Johnson of Galesburg; a step son, Jeff (and Melissa) Olson of Little York; a step daughter, Jenny (and Jeff) Talley of Galesburg; eight grandchildren, Kelly (and Alex) Borkgren, Megan Steck, Cami (and Ryan) Tapscott, Jenna Johnson, Chad Johnson, Ethan Olson, Bailee Olson, and Morgaine Olson; one great granddaughter, Jayla Borkgren; and a brother, Keith (and Norma) Johnson in California. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Kenneth Johnson; and two sisters, Donna Johnson and Loraine Jones.
Larry was a carpenter for 42 years. He worked for Fox Construction and retired as construction superintendent in 1999. He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1955. Larry was a member of Coldbrook Christian Church, where he served as a Deacon. Larry enjoyed antiquing, metal detecting, and mushroom hunting. He especially loved his cat, Whiskers.
Larry served in the United States Marine Corps for two years. He was stationed in the Philippines.
Cremation will be accorded. Visitation will be 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, February 28, 2016 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 29, 2016 at Coldbrook Christian Church with Pastor Rick Warren officiating. Burial will be 3:00 p.m. Monday in Wataga Cemetery.
