Merle M. Laswell, age 82, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, February 18, 2016 at the Heartland Health Care Center, Galesburg, Illinois.
He was born on January 8, 1934 in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of Keith and Bernice Aryes Laswell. He married Bonnie J. Jones on July 8, 1960, in Peoria, Illinois.
Surviving is his wife, Bonnie J. Laswell of Galesburg, Illinois; his children, Donald “Terry” (Jodie) Hinkle of Champaign, Illinois; Rodger (Denise) Babbitt of Redding, California; and Nancy Jean (D.J.) Martin of Rancho Murieta, California; twelve grandchildren and two step grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
He was reared and educated in Galesburg, Illinois. He served in the United States Navy on Active Duty for twenty three years and the Fleet Reserve for nine years. He retired on September 1, 1982 as a Chief Boiler Tech. He was a former member of the Open Bible Church in Galesburg, Illinois. He was a life member of Alpha Lodge 155 A.F.A.M. and served as Worshipful Master in 1992, 1998, 2002 and 2006. He was a member of the Mohammed Shrine, Valley of Peoria in Peoria, Illinois.
Private graveside services were held at Gilson Cemetery where military rites were conducted by VFW 2257 and Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285. Rev. Dave Scholl officiated. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Galesburg Rescue Mission and Women’s Shelter or Shriner’s Hospital.
