Martin “Marty” Dale Cecil

Martin “Marty” Dale Cecil, 68 of Knoxville died at 4:45 am Thursday, August 18, 2016 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.
  He was born June 13, 1948 in Holy Cross, Kentucky, the son of Charles Martin and Mary Spalding Cecil.  He married Kathie Lewis in Abingdon.  He later married Jackie Wetterow on October 19, 1985 in Knoxville.  She survives.
  Marty is also survived by his children, Karla (Randy) Volk of Galesburg, Debbie (Eric Pool) Cecil of Abingdon, Matt (Leslie) Wetterow of Wataga and Michelle Wetterow of Bettendorf, Iowa; his former son-in-law, Dennis Britton of Monmouth; five grandchildren, Kody, Cierra, Bronson, Megan and Jonathan “Goober”; three brothers, Jerry (and Georgine) Cecil of Abingdon, Kenny (and Frances) Cecil of Abingdon and Jim (and Cheri) Cecil of Abingdon; three sisters, Ann (and Gerald) Bjorgo of East Galesburg, Connie (and Bill) Alton of Abingdon and Lois (and Greg) Miller of Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews and their families.
  He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Elaine Cecil.
  He grew up in Abingdon and attended Abingdon Schools.  He served in the Army during the Vietnam War.  He worked at the Abingdon Pottery for 30 years until it closed.  He then studied at Scott Community College in Bettendorf, Iowa for two years.  He later worked at Midstate Manufacturing in Galesburg.  He was of the Catholic faith.  He was a past volunteer fireman for the Abingdon Fire Protection District.  He enjoyed golfing, fishing, playing pool at Harley’s Pub, watching the Chicago Cubs and Bears and he coached summer girls softball teams for many years.
  Cremation was accorded.  A celebration of his life will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, August 27, 2016 at Harley’s Pub, 2243 Grand Avenue, in Galesburg, with military rites at 2 p.m. conducted by Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381.  Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
