Glenn Gore

Glenn Gore of Galesburg died October 1, 2016 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital. Glenn was born November 7, 1921 in Elmwood, Illinois to Vurlis and Phoebe Gore. He was preceded in death by Mildred, his wife of 70 years. They were wed at the Methodist Church in Manito Illinois in 1943. Glenn and Mildred had resided in Galesburg since 1948. Glenn was also preceded in death by niece, Barbara Goodwin.

He is survived by his son, Steve (Roberta) Gore of Galesburg: daughter, Suzy (John) Marek of Washington, Iowa: grandsons, Robert Glenn (Sarah) and Stephen Ryan (Kasia) Gore: great granddaughter Aleksandra (Lexie) Gore, and nieces Kathy (Tim) Leary and Judy Light.

Glenn graduated from Manito High School in 1939; Knox College in 1943 with degree in voice and choral directing and the University of Cincinnati School of Piano Technology in 1947. He was an active piano technician (tuning, repairing, and rebuilding pianos) in Galesburg and surrounding cities for close to 70 years finally retiring at the age of 91. Pianos were his passion-he could remember people by the piano they owned. He was responsible for Knox and Monmouth College pianos for most of his working career-he knew each piano in each college by heart. Glenn was an active member of the Piano Technicians Guild.

Glenn was a Captain in the US Army serving two years in Europe during World War II (102 infantry division. 406 regiment under general Keating) and one year in Korea during the Korean Conflict ( 25th division, 90th artillery battalion). He was also in the National Guard Unit in Galesburg. Glenn was a recipient of a purple heart, two Bronze Stars and the Combat Infantry Badge.

Glenn was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Galesburg where he was active in the choir and various church committees for many years. He was a member of the Vesper Masonic Lodge #584 and the Celestial City Chapter No. 333. He was a member of the Veteran of Foreign War Post 2257 and Galesburg American Legion Post 285.  He also was a member of Community Chorus, Knox 50 year Club, Sigma Nu Fraternity, and the Lake Bracken Country Club. 

He was an avid fisherman-fly fishing was his favorite past time.  He enjoyed gardening, loved pets, and enjoyed a game of golf.  Mowing his yard was a favorite past-time.  Glenn mowed his own yard until this year.  He and Mildred were always playing a game of cards-usually Pitch or Rummy. 

Private family service will be Saturday, October 8, 2016 at Memorial Park Cemetery, Galesburg with Pastor Mary Runge officiating.  Military Rites will be accorded by VFW 2257/American Legion 285 Honor Guard.  There will be no visitation.   Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church.  Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
