Marjorie M. Phelps, 88, of
Monmouth, passed away at 10:05 a.m., Friday, November 4, 2016 at Heartland
Health Care Center, Galesburg, IL.
She was born on May 4, 1928 in
Ophiem, IL, the daughter of Henry F. and Emma E. (Schmalriede) Krug. Marjorie was raised and educated in Kirkwood
and graduated from Kirkwood High School in 1946. She then graduated from Galesburg Cottage
Hospital School of Nursing, and later from Monmouth College with a Bachelor of
Arts Degree in Science in 1955.
Marjorie married S. David Phelps
on August 30, 1958 at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Kirkwood, IL. He
preceded her in death on May 28, 2006.
Marjorie was a mother and homemaker. Once her children were grown, she returned to
nursing, working at local hospitals, home health, nursing homes, and finding
her true calling as a school nurse. She
was most recently the school nurse for Monmouth School District # 38 for 20
years, retiring in 1994. She was a
member of Faith United Presbyterian Church in Monmouth, where she served as
Deacon, taught Sunday school, and Wednesday Night Live. Marjorie was a member of the Illinois School
Nurses Association, Monmouth Education Association, IEA, Crimson Clan; Beta
Beta Beta Biology Fraternity, and Home & Community Education Association-Jennie
Killey Unit President. Marjorie enjoyed
quilting, watercolor painting, crafts, and exercising with her friends at the
YMCA.
Surviving Marjorie is her
children; Timothy D. (Sharon Nagai) Phelps of Monmouth, Kirk W. (Linda) Phelps
of St. Ansgar, Ia., and Ann E. Phelps of Monmouth. Also surviving are her grandchildren; Garet
W. Phelps of St. Ansgar, Sarah L. Phelps of St. Ansgar, Ia, one brother, Donald
D. (Caroline) Krug of Cameron, IL, one cousin, Paula Wright of Pinckneyville,
IL, several nieces and nephew.
She was preceded in death by her
parents, and husband.
