Donald H. White, 92, of
Galesburg, Illinois died at 7:25 p.m. Thursday December 22, 2016 in
the Heartland Heath Care Center, Galesburg.
He
was born on October 4, 1924 in Elmira, New York to Donald B. and Erma
Kase White. He married Billie Jean Beattie in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania on September 9, 1950. She preceded him in death on
February 17, 2010.
Don
is survived by a daughter-in-law, Lynnette White of Washington,
Illinois; three granddaughters, Kim (Joe) Frans and Megan (Nick)
Brent, both of Washington, and Rev. Annie (Lucas) Ladnier of
Ellsworth, Wisconsin; and five great-grandchildren, Morgan and
Beckett Timothy Frans, Harrison, Dashiell and Finley Brent. Also
surviving are Don's grandsons, Andrew & Nick
Elders of Galesburg; Don's "adopted" daughter Carol Dilks
of Bloomington, Indiana and Don's goddaughter Lindsay Huffman of
Tiffin, Ohio. Don was preceded in death by his son, Timothy L.
White, on April 14, 2007.
The family would like to
express their heartfelt gratitude to John & Cindy Robertson, Dee
Quinn and Jean Gummerson for the years of support, friendship &
comfort they provided for Don.
He
owned and operated Don White Oil Service for 30 years, retiring in
1988.
He
was a 1942 graduate of Kenmore (NY) High School and a 1947 graduate
of Cornell University. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945.
Don
was a member and former president of the Galesburg Lions Club. He
also was a recipient of a Melvin Jones Fellowship and the Galesburg
club’s “Lion of the Year.” He was a member and former president
of the Galesburg Area Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the
Central Congregational Church where he sang in the choir and served
as chairperson of the Board of Deacons and the Board of Trustees. He
also served as a volunteer at Galesburg Cottage Hospital and on the
board of Christmas in Action.
Memorial
services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 30, 2016 at Central
Congregational Church with Rev. Dr. Sterrett Collins and Rev. Annie
Ladnier officiating. The family will greet friends following the
service. Memorials may be made to the Central Congregational Church
