Michael G. DeWitt, 71, of
Galesburg, Illinois, died 1:30 a.m. Monday, December 19, 2016 at
Unity Point Methodist Hospital, Peoria, Illinois.
He was born October 6,
1945 in Galesburg to Gerald O. and Dolores Potter DeWitt. He married
Sandra Boelkes September 14, 1968 in Galesburg. She survives.
Also surviving are three
daughters, Michelle DeWitt of Oneida, Illinois, Monica Landon of
Abingdon and Jennifer Lane of Abingdon, a brother, Gregory “Pat”
(and Pauline) DeWitt of Galesburg, a sister, Linda Craig of Ottawa,
Illinois, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Valerie DeWitt.
Mike graduated from
Galesburg High School in 1963. He graduated from Carl Sandburg
College in 1981. He served in the United States Marine Corp from
1965 to 1967 in the Truck Company, 3rd
Marine Division, 3rd
FSR. He worked for the Selective Service, Draft Board for two years.
He worked for Galesburg Mental Health Center for 12 years and then
Galesburg Sheet Metal for eight years. He worked as an Assistant
Director in Building Services at Galesburg Cottage Hospital for 13
years. He worked for Midstate Manufacturing Company as a 2nd
sift foreman for two years. He was the Assistant Chief Engineer for
Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois for six years and
retired in 2008. He later worked for Yemm Chevrolet for several
years and retired from there. He was a life member of First Lutheran
Church in Galesburg. He was also a member of the Galesburg
Motorcycle Club. He was a member of the American Legion Post #285
where he was an officer for many years. He was a member of the
V.F.W. Post #2257 and was the Commander for four years. He was the
coordinator and participant for the Color Guard Services. He enjoyed
hot rods, Harleys and fixing anything. He loved his family,
especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His wife,
Sandy was his best friend.
Funeral service will be
11:00 a.m. Friday, December 23, 2016 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West
Galesburg Chapel. Mike Lummis will officiate. Visitation will be
5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, December 22, 2016 at the chapel. Burial
will be in East Linwood Cemetery, Galesburg. Military Rites by the
VFW 2257 - American Legion 285 Color Guard will be conducted at the
funeral home. Memorials may be made to VFW 2257/ American Legion 285
