Delma Damos, 95, of
North Henderson, IL died at 5:12 am Monday, February 20, 2017
at the Heartland Health Care Center, Galesburg, IL.
Delma Lucille Damos
was born in North Henderson, IL on July 17, 1921, the daughter of Swan Harold
and Anna (Schwartz) Tornquist. She attended New Salem Elementary, Alexis High
School, Illinois State University, and Roosevelt University.
She taught in Alpha,
Waukegan, and Galesburg where she retired as the principal of Churchill Junior
High School. Her love of education always took her in new directions. She
helped set up curriculum at Daniel Webster Junior High in Waukegan, and was part
of setting up education opportunities, under the University of Illinois, for
returning veterans after WWII. She taught business classes to officers at Fort
Sheridan and in Galesburg, started the first soccer program. During her years
as a school administrator, some of her proudest moments were redirecting and
counseling troubled youth.
Delma married
Theodore Damos on December 19, 1948 in Waukegan, Illinois. He preceded her in
death in February 27, 1998.
In later years she
was active in the North Henderson Methodist Church, Floral Club,
PEO Chapter NK in
Galesburg, and in various educational groups. She loved her farm, family and
friendships.
She is survived by
two sons, Donn Damos of North Henderson, IL, David (Karen) Damos of Ingleside,
IL; five grandchildren, Christina Damos, Ted Damos, Anna Damos, Sarah (Robbie)
Palmgren, Rachel (Joe) Woodland, two great grandchildren, and a brother, John
Tornquist of North Henderson.
She was preceded in
death by her parents, husband, and daughter in law, Marsha Damos, and one
infant sister, Maxine Tornquist.
Funeral services will
be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 25, 2017 at the North Henderson United
Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, February 24,
2017 at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth. Cremation will be accorded following the
services with a private family interment in Mt. Vernon Cemetery at a later
