Maurice E. Haptonstall

Maurice E. Haptonstall, 81, of Galesburg, died at 12:37 p.m. Tuesday, May 30, 2017 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center.

He was born June 2, 1935, in Stark County, the son of Maurice C. and Sadie (Rice) Haptonstall. He was married to Elaine Pont.

He is survived by two sons, David (and Echo) Haptonstall of Hanna City and Terry Haptonstall of Galesburg; two grandsons, Jimmy Haptonstall and Kyle Haptonstall; and a sister, Wyona Isles of Victoria. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.

Maurice worked as a laborer at Butler Manufacturing Company for seven years, worked for the City of Galesburg for one year, was a mechanic at the Ford garage for a short time and also at Cherrington Brothers Garage, was a laborer at Maytag for two years, worked for Industrial Movers for three years, was a self-employed trucker for 10 years, and lastly moving business machinery for the company, Help, for 12 years.

His family moved to Galesburg when he was six years old. He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1953. Maurice was an active member of Covenant Church, where he served as a deacon, trustee, and usher. He was a member of the Ford Car Club.

Maurice served in the Army National Guard for three years and in the Army Reserves for three years.

Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 4, 2017 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Covenant Church with Rev. Tom Ek officiating. Burial with military rites by VFW 2257/Legion 285 Veterans Honor Guard will follow in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Church.
