Wayne C. Walters, 89, of
Galesburg, died at 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, April 25, 2017 in Heartland
Health Care Center.
He was born May 25, 1927,
in Burlington, Iowa, the son of Carl H. and Trix (Hull) Walters. He
married Betty Jane Poole on March 13, 1948 in Galesburg. She
preceded him in death July 14, 2014.
He is survived by two
sons, Gregg (wife Anna Veprinsky) Walters of Parker, Colorado and
Garry (wife Carol) Walters of Chicago. In addition to his wife, he
was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law, Nancy
(Gregg); and two sisters.
Wayne was a salesman for
Willis Steel for 44 years. He and Betty retired together on May 29,
1992. He was a member and former deacon at First Christian Church.
He was a member of Alpha Masonic Lodge.
Wayne and Betty met at the
Glass House Roller Rink and roller skated together for nearly 40
years into their late 50’s. They were well known in the local
skating circuit, and received the Presidential Fitness Award for
skating.
Wayne was a die-hard Cubs
fan, finally getting to see them reach and win the World Series. He
was also an avid Bulls fan. He enjoyed bowling, golf, and fishing.
He liked showing off card tricks; and he and Betty enjoyed playing
Pinochle with friends.
Wayne served in the United
States Army during World War II.
Visitation will be 5 to
6:30 p.m., Friday, May 5, 2017 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg
Chapel. Masonic rites will be offered at 6:30 p.m. Friday by Alpha
Masonic Lodge. Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Saturday, May 6, 2017
at the chapel. Rev. Greg Fitch will officiate. Burial with military
honors will be in East Linwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers,
memorial contributions may be made to American Red Cross, Salvation
Army, FISH Food Pantry, or the Milk Fund. Online condolences may be
