She was born on December 7, 1925 in Raritan, IL, the daughter of Mervin and Ruby Burkett Lauver. On April 15, 1945, she married A.J. Smith at the former Old Bedford Christian Church in rural Blandinsville, IL. He preceded her in death on January 19, 1993.
Darlene was a graduate of Terre Haute High School, Terre Haute, IL. She worked as a secretary for attorney Lyman Fort, Henderson County Farm Bureau and for over 30 years at Country Companies Insurance Company, all in Stronghurst. She was a member of the Stronghurst Christian Church and its women’s organizations. Her family was the most important thing in her life.
Survivors include, one son, Rick Smith of Lomax, IL, two daughters, Kathy (Ronnie Schlag) Cole of Media, IL and Lisa (Mark) Burgus of Stronghurst, IL, four grandchildren, Justin Smith, Kayla (Charlie) Smith, Kyle Burgus and Kevin (Ali) Burgus, one sister, Sharon (Gary) Patch of Roseville, IL and one brother, Gary (Gladys) Lauver of Denver, CO. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two brothers, Kenneth and Ronald Lauver.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 29, 2017 at the Terre Haute Cemetery, with Rev. Steve Minkler officiating. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst.
