Harold E. “Shorty” Newell

Harold E. “Shorty” Newell, 90, of Peoria, formerly of Galesburg, died at 10:56 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2017 in Heartland Health Care Center in Peoria.

He was born July 4, 1927, in Chillicothe, Illinois, the son of John James and Edna Mae (Crotz) Newell. He married Dorothy Russell on May 31, 1955, in Corinth, Mississippi. She preceded him in death September 30, 2008.

He is survived by seven brothers and sisters, Dewey (Elaine) Newell of Metamora, Leonard (Julia) Newell of Kentucky, Ralph (Bea) Newell of Olin, Iowa, Lynn (Jim) Foster of East Peoria, and Kenneth (Donna) Newell, Barbara (Frank) James, and Alice Gengler, all of Chillicothe; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers and sisters, Daniel, Everett, Richard, and Dale Newell, Doris Taylor, and Lorene Bailey.

Shorty worked at Admiral/Maytag Manufacturing Company for 31 years, retiring in 1989. He was a member of First Christian Church of Galesburg. Shorty was a tireless volunteer for Heartland Health Care Center in Galesburg for 10 years. He helped the residents, delivered mail, called Bingo, and manned the door. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, but enjoyed the game so much, he would watch any televised game.

Shorty served in the United States Army for eight years, serving during both World War II and the Korean War. During World War II, he had the honor of chauffeuring Bob Hope. He was able to take the Honor Flight on June 13, 2017.

Shorty never met a stranger. He was loved not only by his family, but by all who met him. He was able to celebrate his 90th birthday two weeks ago surrounded by his family.

Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, July 24, 2017 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Burial with military honors will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
