Virgil Ray Presswood

Virgil Ray Presswood, 84, of Monmouth, passed away at 5:55 a.m., Sunday, March 15, 2015 at Monmouth Nursing Home, Monmouth.

He was born on June 24, 1930 in St. Johns, IL, and is the son of Kenneth Ray and Ethel (Runion) Presswood.  He was raised and educated in Pinckneyville, IL.

Virgil served in the United States Air Force and Army.

He married Zelda Ruth Hayes on June 24, 1960 in Pickneyville, IL. 

Virgil was a Deputy Sherriff and Jailer at the Warren County Sherriff’s Office for 37 years.  He also worked at Gales Rubber Company for 35 years.

He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church in Galesburg, Monmouth Odd Fellows, and the Monmouth V.F.W. Post 2301. Virgil enjoyed gardening, flowers, and birds.  He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and he loved music, especially Johnny Cash. 

Virgil is survived by five sons, Tom (Teri) Williams of Galesburg, Ken (Sue) Presswood of Monmouth, John (Bonnie) Williams of Monmouth, Stan (Marsha) Presswood of Colona, IL, Greg Presswood of Portland, OR.; one daughter Monita (Mark) Davies of Monmouth; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; two brothers, Ross Presswood of Blytheville, AR and  Bobby Runion of Metropolis, IL; one sister Brenda Norton of Missouri, and dear friends, Amy & Craig Tabb of Monmouth. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter Patty Woodcock, and two brothers. 


Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 19, 2015 at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth.  His family will receive friends prior to the services from 12:00 Noon – 2:00 p.m.  Cremation will take place following the services.  Interment  with military honors will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 20, 2015 at Warren County Memorial Park.  Memorials can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.  For more information or to leave an on-line condolence please visit, www.mcguireanddaviesfuneralhome.com.  734-6008.
