John H. Shimmin

John H. Shimmin, age 92, of Monmouth, IL., passed away at 6:47 am on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at the Roseville Nursing and Rehab Center in Roseville, IL.

He was born on June 19, 1922 in Lenox Township of Warren County and is the son of John Robert and Lessie Lena (Weegar) Shimmin. He attended the Brannan Rural Elementary School and graduated from Monmouth High School with the Class of 1940. On August 27, 1942, John married Hazel Irene Rutledge at the Fairview Center United Brethern Church and she preceded him in death on June 5, 2010. He farmed locally until 1962 then worked for F.S. Petroleum as a salesman until he retired in 1984. John served as Lenox Township clerk, auditor, and trustee for a number of years, and John has been the Mayor of "Shimminville" for 50 years. He was a lifetime member of the Fairview Center United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir for 50 years, was in the Homebuilders Sunday School Class, and also served as the Church Treasurer for 25 years. John currently worked with his son Stephen as the financial secretary at his Church. He was a longtime member of Gideons International. John had a passion for singing and belonged to the Monmouth Barbershoppers locally and the Silveridge Christian Fellowship and Barbershoppers Groups while in Mesa, AZ. 

He is survived by two sons; Curt (Sandra) Shimmin and Steve (Ruth Ellen) Shimmin both of rural Monmouth, IL, five grandchildren; Jonathan, Kathleen, Matthew, Stephenie, and Henry, and six great-grandchildren; Bailey, Jennifer, Sara, and Kora, Kourtney, and John Curtis. John was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister, one great-grandchild, and wife Hazel.

A memorial service will be held at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at Fairview Center United Methodist Church. His family will be present to receive friends from 3:30-5:30 prior to the service. Cremation is being accorded. A memorial fund is being established for Fairview Center United Methodist Church.
