Mr. Russell W. Fox, age 91,
of Galesburg, Illinois, died at 4:25 p.m. Friday, April 3, 2015 at Seminary
Manor.
He was born August 10, 1923
in Macomb, Illinois, the son of Howard R. and Opal Butler Fox. He married Alta
S. Dunlevey in Galesburg on September 15, 1946. She preceded him in death
November 23, 1996.
Russell is survived by son,
Jeffrey O.(Diane) Fox of West Des Moines, Iowa; daughter, Susan (Carl) McGaffic
of Marietta, Georgia; daughter-in-law, Pamela Fox of Galesburg; eight
grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by
his parents; wife; son, Stephen; brothers, Harry and Marvin; and great
granddaughter, Annah.
He was raised in Lincoln,
Illinois before moving to Galesburg in 1939. A 1943 graduate of Galesburg High
School, he entered the United States Navy in June 1943 and was discharged in
March 1946.
Russell established his
construction business on May 1, 1950 and retired 50 years later on May 1, 2000.
In the interim, his sons, and several of his grandsons worked with him and for
him. In addition, there were several generations of many families that were
employees of Fox Construction. Russell
once said of his business career “There were periods when you’re so damned
broke that you don’t know what you’ll do and how you’ll ever get out of it, but
you’re just determined, that, by God, you will.” He covered the payroll for
2,600 consecutive weeks.
Russell was a member of the
First United Methodist Church in Galesburg, where he served on the church board,
was a 50 year member of the Knox Gale Society, member and past president of
Soangetaha Country Club, member, past president and International President of
the American King Show Pigeons Club, and a 50 year member of the Noon Rotary
Club. He loved to play golf with his friends and greatly enjoyed his
opportunity to play most of the British Open courses.
The family would like to
thank the staffs of Hawthorne Village, Seminary Manor, and Soangetaha Country
Club for their caring treatment of Russell.
Visitation will be noon to
1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 12, 2015 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorial services will follow at 1:30 p.m. at
the chapel. Cremation will be accorded. Memorial contributions may be directed to the
OSF St Mary Medical Center Auxiliary. Online
