Dorothy E. “Dot” King

Dorothy E. “Dot” King, age 94, of rural Knoxville, died at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg.

She was born on August 31, 1920 in Victoria, the daughter of Arthur T. and Ethel M. Hedstrom McKie. She graduated from Victoria High School and went on to receive her teaching degree from Western Illinois University. After graduation, she held teaching positions at Fosmire School and Bishop Hill School. She married Hiram A. King on August 8, 1944 in rural Victoria, Illinois.

She now joins Hiram, who preceded her in death in1990, almost 25 years to the day. Surviving is a son: Ted R. (Karen) King of Galesburg; three grandchildren: Seth (Shannon) King of Knoxville, Nathan (Stephanie) King, Aaron (Jessica) King, both of Chicago, five great grandchildren: Loren, Emily, Olivia, Henry, and Harper King. Her extended family includes Harold and Carol Sue (niece) Asmussen, and Harvey and Sharon (niece) Ponder, their sons, Jon, Chad, and Drew as well as their immediate families who provided care and attention well into her later years. Also, a special thanks to Jennifer Cox, Dorothy’s niece, who provided extensive in–home care. This short list fails to include the many friends and family, especially cousins within the McKie Family, neighbors and many others she spoke with frequently throughout her lifetime.

With Hiram and Ted she helped farm various plots throughout Knox County and raised a prized dairy herd outside of Knoxville. Each Guernsey calf was named and milked twice a day by the family, an activity Dorothy largely took part in. Upon retirement, she traveled extensively, often in group settings, on various bus trips and Elderhostels. Dorothy helped out at Lacky & Sons Monuments in Galesburg and was known as “Aunt Dot”. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Knoxville and Victoria, where she taught Sunday school. She enjoyed various social activities including playing pinochle with friends, swim classes at the Galesburg YMCA, watching various sports teams, including the Fightin’ Illini and Knoxville Blue Bullets. We would be remiss to exclude her passion for baseball and the Chicago Cubs. If she had one letdown in her life, it was never seeing the Cubs win in the World Series, a harsh reality for the rest of us as well.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at the Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes & Crematory in Knoxville with visitation starting at 10:00 A.M. Rev. Michel D. Clark will officiate. Interment will be in the Knoxville Cemetery, Knoxville. Memorials may be made to the Knox County Nursing Home or Knoxville FFA for a scholarship. On-line condolences and sympathy cards may be sent through www.hurd-hendricksfuneralhome.com.
