Marion F. "Red" Shappell

Marion F. "Red" Shappell, age 85, of Biggsville, Illinois, passed away at 4:40 am on Thursday, November 19, 2015 at the Klein Center in West Burlington, Iowa. He was born on March 22, 1930 in St. Mary's Township, IL, the son of Howard and Pearl (Sellars) Shappell. Red attended school in the St. Mary's area and graduated from St. Mary's High School. He proudly served his Country in the United States Air Force. On April 15, 1951, Red married Betty Marie Sterett in Biggsville, IL and she preceded him in death on January 31, 2004. 

He began work at Caterpillar in Peoria, worked as a farmhand in Biggsville, and later worked at Engdahl's Implement in Monmouth. Red then owned his own livestock and grain farm in Biggsville from which he retired in 1997. Red loved the outdoors, fishing, elk hunting in Colorado, watching football and baseball, and attending St. Louis Cardinal baseball games. Betty and Red loved to travel and took many trips to Alaska, Hawaii, and all around the United States. 

Red is survived by two daughters; Rhonda (Kenneth) Peterson of Biggsville and Janis (James) Schott of St Louis, MO, two granddaughters; Brooke and Kate, and one grandson; Lucas. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty, three brothers; Merle, Robert, Harold, and one sister Virgie.
A memorial service is planned for 10:30 am on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at the First United Presbyterian Church of Biggsville. His family will receive friends from 9:30-10:30 prior to the service at the Church. Cremation is being accorded. Interment will follow the service at the South Henderson Cemetery.
