Galesburg – Joe Rescinito, 91 of Galesburg, passed away at 10:10 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born December 28, 1924 in Abingdon, the son of Matteo and Rachele Reciniello Rescinito. He married Joan “Jody” Rogers on June 30, 1951 in Abingdon.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of almost 65 years, Joan; his children, Rachel (John) Bicego of Galesburg and Sam (Cindy) Rescinito of Galesburg; four grandchildren, Nicki (Matthew) Huels, Joe Stull, Kelby Rescinito and Alyssa Rescinito; two great-grandchildren, Wynne and Cormac Huels. He was also blessed with three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren from the Painter family and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren from the Bicego family. Joe is also survived by two sisters, Rose Cundy of St. Petersburg, Florida and Elvira (William) Krogmeier of Holyoke, Colorado; and several nieces and nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, and three adult sisters, Anna Rescinito, Mary Pandolfo and Antoinette Legate.
He grew up in Abingdon and graduated from Abingdon High School in 1945. He served three years in WW II with the US Army Coast Artillery in the Philippines and Okinawa. He worked for the telephone company in Galesburg for 35 years. After he and Jody retired, they moved to Lakeland, Florida where they resided for 21 years before moving back to Galesburg in 2007. He was passionate about his faith and he was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Galesburg. He also volunteered many hours at Costa School. He was a member of American Legion Post #285 in Galesburg.
Cremation will be accorded. Private burial of his ashes will be in the Abingdon Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 of Abingdon.
Memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 2, 2016 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Galesburg. Monsignor Ernest Pizzamiglio will officiate. The family will receive friends at a luncheon at the Parish Activity Center following the service. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
