Richard H. Flaar

Richard H. Flaar, 85, of Knoxville, died at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2016 in the Knox County Nursing Home.

Richard was born March 31, 1931 in Galesburg, the son of Ray and Edna (Peterson) Flaar. He married Phyllis Johnson on July 13, 1952.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; a son, David (and Coleen) Flaar of Galesburg; a daughter-in-law, Charmaine Flaar of Oswego; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren; a sister, Marilyn (and Gary) Sage of Galesburg; and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Robert Flaar.

Dick, as he was known to most, graduated from Galesburg High School in 1949. He attended Western Illinois University for two years. Dick began working for the C.B.&Q. Railroad in 1952 as a locomotive fireman/engineer. He retired in May of 1987 as a trainmaster foreman. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers 644.

Dick was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Masons, and numerous bridge groups. He loved the Chicago Cubs and Bears.

Cremation will be accorded. Visitation will be 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorial services will follow at 2 p.m. with Rev. Jon Sims officiating. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Dick’s name may be made to the Galesburg Public Library. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
