Arlene Safford, 95,
formerly of Galesburg, Illinois, died at 2:30 a.m. Friday, October 7,
2016 at Kahl Home in Davenport, Iowa.
She was born May 9, 1921,
in Galesburg, the daughter of Richard and Minnie (Campbell) Rommel.
She married Harvey D. Safford on July 22, 1946 in Galesburg. He
preceded her in death February 19, 2013.
She is survived by a son,
James H. Safford of Bettendorf, Iowa; a daughter, Sharon (and Tom)
Harty of Franksville, Wisconsin; two grandchildren, John Harty and
Adrienne Peterson; four great grandchildren, Lucas, Ainsley, David,
and Cora; and a niece and nephew. In addition to her husband, she
was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Richard Rommel; and
a sister, Gladys Rommel.
Arlene graduated from
Sparta Township High School in Wataga, Illinois in 1939. She went on
to graduate from Western Illinois University in 1943. Arlene was a
third grade teacher for over 30 years in Peoria and Wataga.
She was a member of
Central Congregational Church in Galesburg. Arlene loved music,
especially playing the piano.
Visitation will be 9 to 10
a.m. Saturday, October 15, 2016 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg
Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 10 a.m. with Rev. Jim Ecklund
officiating. Private family burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery in
