Evelyn Mae Dexter, 94, of
Knoxville, passed from this life to her eternal home at 9:58 p.m.
Friday, October 7, 2016 at Heartland Health Care Center.
Evelyn was born in East
Moline, Illinois on January 12, 1922 the daughter of Seldon and
Bertha Van Norman. On April 17, 1953, she married Forrest M. Dexter
in Galesburg.
She is survived by three
sons, Dan (Barb) Dexter of Galesburg, Dennis (Therese) Dexter of
Litchfield, Arizona, and Rev. Mark (Debbie) Dexter of Knoxville; two
daughters, Janet (Roger) Greuel of Brooks, Georgia and Mary Mastin of
St. Louis, Missouri; grandchildren; step grandchildren; great
grandchildren and step great grandchildren. Evelyn was preceded in
death by her parents; two brothers; her husband in 2000; a son,
Thomas L. Dexter; a grandson, Nick Mastin; and a great grandson,
Sullivan Mastin.
Evelyn graduated from East
Moline High School. She worked for Dr. L.D. Barding MD and Dr. P.W.
Powell MD in Moline before enlisting in the United States Navy during
World War II. She served at U.S.N. Hospital in Long Island, New
York. She then farmed alongside her husband for 47 years in both
Iowa and Illinois.
Evelyn was a member of the
American Legion Post, active in Christian Women’s Clubs in Kewanee
and Galesburg, and participated in state and local Mothers of Twins
Club. She was of Protestant faith.
Graveside service will be
11 a.m. Monday, October 10, 2016 in Westfall Cemetery. Rev. Jon
Sibley will officiate and military honors will be provided by VFW
2257/Legion 285 Veterans Honor Guard. There will be no visitation.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
