Frederick "Fred" H. Smith

Frederick "Fred" H. Smith, 85 of Abingdon, passed away at 6:15
a.m. Saturday, October 8, 2016 at the Care Center of Abingdon.
  He was born January 4, 1931 in Abingdon, the son of Russell H. and Dorothy
Smith.  He married A. Elaine Larsen on April 3, 1955 at the Abingdon
Christian Church.
  Fred is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Elaine; one son, Dan
(Tami) Smith of Chadwick, Illinois; two grandsons, Shae (Donna) Smith of
Rock Falls and Seth (Courtney) Smith of Chadwick; and four
great-grandchildren, Dawson Smith, Bryson Smith, Christian Smith and Thea
Smith.
  He was preceded in death by his parents.
  Fred graduated from Abingdon High School in 1949.  He served in the Air
Force during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on February 27,
1955.  He farmed east of Abingdon for 40 years retiring in 1996.  He was
also a carpenter.  He was a member of the Abingdon Christian Church and
served on the Church Board for many years.  He enjoyed spending time with
his family and friends, fishing, mushroom hunting, woodworking, searching
for arrowheads and collecting Indian artifacts. Fred also took pride in
placing the American Flags throughout the city of Abingdon for special days
to honor America.
  Graveside service with military rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday,
October 11, 2016 at the Abingdon Cemetery.  Rev. Darryl McDaniel will
officiate.  There will be no visitation.  Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon
Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Abingdon Christian
Church, 409 S. Main St., Abingdon, IL 61410.  Online condolences may be made
