Elizabeth A. “Betty” Shunick

Elizabeth A. “Betty” Shunick, 79, lifetime resident of Galesburg, Illinois, went to be with her Lord and Savior on December 26, 2017 at 1:27 a.m. in Peoria, Illinois after a courageous battle with cancer.

Betty was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, and great grandmother and a friend to many who will miss her dearly.  Elizabeth is reunited in heaven with her husband, Robert Shunick and her two sisters and their husbands, Martha (Tom) Caldwell and Mary (Dave) Lukens.

Betty was born in Galesburg to Charles and Mattie (Fleener) Trusch on April 15, 1937.  She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1955 and then attended Brown’s Business College.  She married Robert M. Shunick on February 15, 1958 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Galesburg.  At 12 years old, she started her first job as a car hop at Parkway Drive Inn.  She was also employed at Gale Products, St. Mary Medical Center, Cottage Hospital, Community Memorial Hospital, and finally retired from St. Francis Medical Center.  She loved holding the annual South Street Neighborhood Watch Block Party each summer for the children in her neighborhood.  She enjoyed ceramics and sitting on her front porch in the warm Illinois summers.  Nothing pleased her more than helping others.

Betty is survived by her two daughters, Sheila Shunick and Leslie Moore, both of Galesburg and son, Matthew (Alexandra) Shunick of Gainesville, Florida.  Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were the light of her life.  She leaves behind five grandchildren, Char Shunick, Tearyll Shunick, Elizabeth Shunick, Nicholas Shunick, and Addisyn Shunick.  She also leaves behind six great grandchildren.

Visitation will be 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 31, 2016 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel.  A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father William Miller officiating.  Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.  Memorials may be given to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.  Online condolences may be made at http://www.h-p-w.com/.
