Howard B. “Bus” Moore

Howard B. “Bus” Moore, 98, of Alexis, IL died at 7:53 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.

Bus was the 3rd son of Clyde E. and Edna (Azdell) Moore and was born in Little York, IL on July 17, 1918.  His family moved to Alexis in 1933 where he graduated from Alexis High School in 1936.

Bus married Martha L. Loveridge on April 18, 1936 in Alexis, IL and they had one daughter, Patricia Corben. Martha passed away on September 19, 2012.

After high school, he worked for his dad at Moore’s Grocery interrupted by serving 2 years with the United States Army during WWII in the European Theatre where he participated in the Battle of the Bulge.  After coming home, Martha and he bought the grocery store and ran it until 1970.  He worked for 4 years at the Illinois Secretary of State Driver’s License Office in Monmouth. He also was the janitor at the Alexis Grade School until 1983, a bus driver and substitute mail carrier

He was a board  member of the Alexis Fire Protection District, served as treasurer of the Alexis School District, was a 40 year member of the Alexis Fire Department, served on the Warren County Veteran Administration board and was a 70 year member of the James Harvey Scott American Legion Post #189 and a member of the 40 & 8 Post #706 of Monmouth. Bus participated in the Honor Flight in 2009 with his brothers, Jack & Dick.

Survivors include his daughter, Pat Corben of Alexis; 3 grandchildren; many great and great great grandchildren; 2 brothers, John “Jack” Moore of Florida and Richard “Dick” Moore of Galesburg, and special friend and caretaker, JoAnne Perry of Alexis. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son in law, Jay Corben; granddaughter in law, Elaine Corben; grandson, Bruce Corben; great grandson, Ben Corben; and brothers, Robert Moore, Donald Moore and Pete Moore.

Graveside services with Military Honors will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 3, 2017 at Alexis Cemetery.  Visitation will be Sunday, July 2, 2017 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at the Alexis Presbyterian Church.  Memorials may be given to the Alexis Fire Department, Alexis Ambulance Service, Alexis Cemetery Association or the Alexis War Memorial.
